It puts an extreme amount of stress on the transmission when you do this and very well could cause damage.

The more important question is why you would want to switch from N to D while moving?

if you are trying to "save gas", you got the wrong car. hill coasting actually burns more gas than saves, plus it does not work with an automatic.

keep the gears enganged while coasting saves more gas than going neutral.

Aren't the injectors closed while in gear (downhill), yet open if in Neutral?

^YEP! fuel is cut off. throttles are closed because the engines are turning and that it requires no power.

if u disengage the gears, the ECU then needs to feed fuel to the engine to maintain idle rpm thus using up more fuel.

that's what the experts told me.

Yeah actually you're using no fuel at all when coasting in gear with no throttle vs. being in neutral, at least in a modern engine. Try it yourself by resetting your MPG gauge going down-hill in-gear and down-hill in neutral, you'll see...

As switching between neutral and drive, I'm not a mechanic but I honestly don't see how it could hurt it. The trans is electronically controlled and knows how fast your going, and will keep itself in the appropiate gear for the speed even in neutral. There is no shock applied to the gears when switching from N to D while moving unless you are on the throttle.

but coasting in gear actually slows the car down and yet neutral doesnt, actually speeds up. te triptonic thing, when driving in manual mode and shift, do u need to have ur foot up, shift, and press the pedal like manual/? or shift while ur foot is down/?

tiptronic shifting doesnt change the way the transmission shifts, it just allows you to tell it when to shift. You can keep your foot on the gas and shift.

Coast in high gear and you will encounter the least rolling resistance - 4th has the least drivetrain loss. Fuel injectors do cut off on decel while in gear. If you have a wideband hooked up this becomes obvious.

I am not sure if moving from neutral to drive at speed but not under load (with no throttle) will damage anything. If you're under load, you will damage the 5AT.

He means coasting down a hill in neutral "with no throttle".
i.e. foot off the gas
