I belive its a myth that 87 is that much better than 91 +. Yes, the higher the better if you're racing but for gas milage and things, its not such a huge difference to where you have to swear your life on it.

for some reasons, ppl don't want to associate their cars with lower octane.

Default The 350Z stock is tuned to run on 91 octane fuel.

I believe that takes into consideration:

performance
emissions
and engine life.

91 is good for me.

So everyone is going on about how they drove 20 miles from home to get gas at a $0.05 cheaper station than local ones. They also think I am NUTS for buying premium.

I actually have to explain to people that the penny pinching they're doing is LUDICROUS. The difference between 87 and 93 octane gas is $0.15. Now multiply that by say 20 gallons (easier roundoff) You're looking at $3.00 a week difference in gas (I use a tank a week, I'm conservative I guess.) WHOOP DEE DOO $3.00!!! people spend TWICE that much EVERY day on CIGARETTES in MI. WHY is everyone flipping out over the difference? I also have fun explaining to the people who drive the 20 miles for cheaper gas that the fuel they're wasting going out to the trip costs them the money they saved and the fuel they spend going home is a direct loss.

If people would only sit down and do the math life would seem simpler. Instead I get to hear coworkers CRYING about the price of gas while they're puffing away on cigarrettes (can anyone tell I'm an avid non smoker? I don't mind smokers I just think it's ironic how they consider their vice a necessity yet they b!7ch about gas prices.)
Thats amazing that gas is cheaper in Mi than TX. We are paying $2.69 for
premium here in the Dallas, Fort Worth area.

bottom line in the ,manual it says use premium gas, recommended right , and you have a sports car right,........with a high compression engine , .....i mean is there any question that you would be doing a service to your car if you just bought better quality food for it .

Budgeted, hehehehehehe did you budget the health costs associated with smoking or the time off from work due to sick days?? Do you budget the increases in food costs, clothing costs and other inflationary items?? What about the drop in home loan interest rates or the decrease in income taxes the past few years. How about the increase in 401K allocation or the ability to put more into Roth IRAs. People who know nothing about money always seem to complain about the little things, because they can't look at the big picture or do not take advantage of the many positives that have occurred recently. Hell, the interest rate drops on home loans was significant enough to pay for the average driver's gas bill every year. Plus the gas prices have brought truck and SUV prices down so low, that the money saved right now will pay for a couple years worth of gas!!!!

Oh and yeah I would take free 87 octane fuel over the premium any day, but if I was paying for both I would use the premium, and I do today.

To make you all Jelous: I only fuel 100 Octane, avalible at most gas stations here in Sweden. The lowest we have is 95.

To make you all happy again:
1 Gallon of 100 Octane costs 7.20$... 95 octane is like 6.70$... 400% of which is tax...

15000 miles per year / 20 mpg = 750 gallons a year

Premium runs about 20-30 cents more

.3 x 750 = $225 a year (less than $20 a month)

If that breaks you... you are driving the wrong car.

first, lol. . . second, why do europeans tax gasoline so much? How do politicians justify a 400% tax on anything?

Exactly, I use 93 on ANY car... slightly cleaner, slightly better gas mileage.
'nuff said.

---kinda makes you wonder why Cali. only has 91 octane, yet they are so rediculous with emissions. Theoretically, higher octane = lower emmisions.

I've been using 93 octane over 91 octane.. haven't since thrown a misfire code. (Been running for about 4 months on 93 octane, prior i used to see the code about once a month..sometimes more).

The higher octane you use, the more timing you will get from the ECU, but only if you ask for it (WOT runs). Refer to the big long ECU thread Sentry65 started. At least that's what I gathered from it anyway.

Hehe well you tell me?! They tax everything that is not "good" for you or the enviroment insanly, like booze and gas both have somewhere around 400% tax... I guess there is some reason in that but its still WAYY TOO MUCH!!

Bad Idea running 93 on cars designed for 87. I have had mixed responces, most cars get better mileage since the higher octane burns slower, however some cars will stall or can't start the engine with the high octane gas. My parents had a 1998 protege a few years ago and since they had such good luck with their old toyota running 93 from day one they decided to do the same with the mazda. About a year later the car started stalling and sometimes wouldn't start. They took it to the dealer and they asked if they had been using 93 octane gas. They told my parents to use 87 since thats what the car expects to receive. My parents didn't believe them but they gave 87 a try and all of the problems went away. They got so used to filling up with 87 they put 87 in my old 626 once which since it was a v6 recommended 91 or higher. I got horriable gas mileage and I swear the car felt slower.

I am interested to see how the Z will handle 87 octane but I am not willing to try it out. I think I remember reading a thread in the street racing forum about a guy who was losing to his friends SRT-4 then he found out the Z recommends high octane gas, once he switched he started beating the SRT-4.

bottom line: if the manufacturer prescribes supreme unleaded then that is what you should use. Nothing else.
