Default Clutch Diagnostic Help

Hi guys, im trying to narrow this problem down before i take it to my friend who is a mechanic but has not worked on z's as much. 2003 track.

The problem is in the clutch. sparatically the clutch when pushed in feels, raw or crunches when pushed to the ground. I dont know how to better describe it ive never had this problem in any of my cars. Sometimes im driving down street in say 2nd then ill push clutch in it makes a little click sound then feels like its crunching as it goes in, then other times when i push it its smooth as hell and great. I already have Redline Tranny fluid in the trans which feels great the gears never grind, but when this "crunch" or rawness happens its definitely not a smooth shift. Clutch master cylinder? What are parts i should tell my friend to look at? Thnx guys

Even when car is off, when i push clutch in to ground it makes a little click or snappy sound. So when out nothing, push in "click" "snap" sorta thing. When fully pressed down if i let it spring back a little bit maybe half way it clicks again. I can reproduce at will didnt know what to make of it since im car stupid at times. Clutch pedel becomes soft after driving for a while too. Its great when first started but after a while clutch feels weak

***UPDATE****
Took to mechanic, he told me it is most likley the throwout bearing, or the pressure plate fingers not lining up correctly when engaged which is causing the rough sensation. He said my clutch is strong tho, so for now i may have to live with it until its time to replace the clutch when it wears out. Is there anything i can to resolve this w/o dropping the tranny? Or at least help

I'd probably check out the master and slave cylinders first just because dropping the tranny won't be required. If you find an obvious problem then great, you'll have saved yourself some work.

To me though, it seems more likely there's some type of mechanical failure with the clutch. It could be a bad throwout bearing, improper size throwout bearing (too small to engage the fingers of the pressure plate correctly), or maybe the diaphragm springs bad. ...could be a number of things. Unfortunately you'll probably have to drop the tranny to find out.

Ive noticed it still does it when car is off. When clutch is pushed all the way down (to the floor) then slowly let out, about 1-2 inches there is a pop, snap crackle thing. Push clutch down and release again same thing, there is a certain spot in release where this happens. must be what im feeling when actually driving. Since car is off does it eliminate it being the cmc or smc?

Not necessarily. The cmc and sc both work with the car off otherwise you wouldn't be able to start your car.

Having said that, I don't think either of those are your problem. Why don't you just put the car in the air and get a friend to try to identify where the noise is coming from while you press the pedal? That will help narrow down the possibilities.

Or what should i expect to pay if i want to fix it.

not something I'd risk living with - having seen throw out bearings explode and fingers on pressure plates snap, it pays to have it fully inspected and fixed sooner rather than later

replacing clutch would fix problem right? since clutch's comes with pressure plate and throwout bearing. What a decent shop usually charge? Im gonig to get quotes later but i have no idea. Its not a contant problem, just sometimes. Still worth fixing?

A new clutch kit is a pressure plate and disk. Some also come with throw out bearing, some don't. Install wise, better off just asking local area shops, as labor rates vary widely througout the country. Time wise, anything in the 2-5 hour area is considered normal, depending upon the level of experience the shop has with the Z, and how they bill their labor (some go by the hour, some go by the job)

depends on the mileage, how you drive

if you need a clutch, from OEM replacement to something more performance oriented, let us know
