What kind of failure causes a rattling noise in the engine? It's loudest at about 2.5k and tracks with the speed of it. A pretty engine savvy friend of mine suggested it may be a rod bearing. Any one agree?

 

something just may be loose man, i'd check all throughout the engine...even under the car wouldn't hurt..have you modded anything lately???

 

No, but it threw a SES light yesterday. Had it checked at Advanced and it was something about the camshaft position sensor.

 

sounds like possible timing chain issue.loose chain or tensioner can throw cams out of a smooth synch and set cam position codes.......something to check into.

 

haha...wow, what a coincidince...yeah, when my cam sensors went out...it caused the vdc, slip and engine light to come on...after my mechanic ordered new ones from nissan at 110 bucks a piece he replaced both of them and only charged me half price for labor because he felt sorry for me because he said aren't foreign cars not supposed to break like this...lol...he said cam sensors get oil and dirt on them like any other piece of electric part and have to be replaced...check it man, may have found your problem

no, but my lights were coming on

 

I disconnected the battery for about a minute then hooked it back up. No more SES light! I'm going to begin tearing apart the motor tomorrow, bottom first. There is definitely some kind of mechanical failure in there. I hope it's a rod bearing. $100 for a set of those vice $2-3k for a replacement motor.

 

yeah, i reset the ecu and my stupid light came back on after about 50 miles...i hope you find it man!

 

Pretty sure I rolled/wiped a bearing. Pulled off the oil pan in preparation to pull off the bottom half of the motor and found some copper shavings in the bottom! It's good news and bad news. Bad being that something crapped itself. Good being that it is just a bearing, not expensive.

Yeah. Ordering parts tomorrow. I normally use 5 or 10w30 all synthetic with a good filter like K&N or Purolater Pur One. I think maybe my pressure dropped too low during a high RPM extended turn.

 

Rod bearing is what it sounds like. They are usually loudest around 2,500 rpms.


Is it a rev up with oil consumption?

Thanks. No, it's a regular VQ35. Ordered rod, main, and thrust bearings this morning. Hope to get them around Monday. I'll keep you posted...

 

What funny about this thread is that I'm have the exact same problem with my z, the noise started at about 2.5 to 3k rpm and continued as I drove. I was told by a friend of mine who's a tech at nissan that my rod is knocking. Also found little metal shavings in the oil.

 

Yep. Time for a bearing job. Mine will be here on the 6th. I'll know which one shat itself shortly after that.

 

UPDATE: Finally got around to removing the old bearings. The rod bearings on #5 cylinder were F'd. Some of the others were showing some of the copper backing. I'm glad I went ahead and ordered rod and main bearings! I'll post some pics of them soon.

 

Hi there, I've got a 1.0 litre Yaris Blue edition, 04. I've had it for just under two years and it hasn't gave me any problems so far. I noticed today that when i was changing from 1st to 2nd gear, the engine was giving a kind of whirling noise. After i realized, i turned off the radio to see if it was happening all the time. It only seems to happen if I'm doing between 10 and 15 mph and doesn't happen every time, although quite often. It's definitely not the way I'm changing gear before anyone asks, every other gear change is fine apart from 1st to 2nd. I've noticed on the forum a lot of other people seem to have problems with the yaris gear box. Any clues? huh.gif
