transmission problem in 03 350z? dealership problems
I just took my car to two different dealerships and they both want an hour for a tech to drive it around. Then if they do feel a problem in the tranny. I have to give them permission to break it down for a Nissan inspector to look at it to approve the warranty work. The problem is that if it's due to normal wear and tear OR abuse and neglect. They won't cover it. That's 6 hours they want to charge me plus another 5 to put it back together.
Does anyone else have problems getting a dealership to warranty a transmission issue? I don't have the updated CD009 tranny.
My second gear grinds every so often and more often in the cold. Then there is this whining noise when it's in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gear coming to a stop. Then there is the cold start noise, goes away when I press the clutch in thing. I'm so sick of this tranny.

sounds almost like what I had going on. I had a new trannsmission put in under warranty, and they didn't adjust the clutch right so 6,000 miles later there was an audible whirring/grinding sound when I engaged the clutch (let off the pedal). Took it in and they covered it. Turned out to be the front bearing seal went out and the bearing went bad.
First off, don't blame the dealer. They are following Nissan's guidelines. The dealer is correct in telling you up front what you could be facing if it is not a warrantable repair.A warranty protects against premature wear or breakage due to a DEFECTIVE part.Having warranty does not give the owner any rights, there is no expressed liability and seeing as someone besides the owner may have to pay for the repair, the manufacturer and the dealer have the right to protect themselves
So I assume it is under warranty.
I understand your frustration. Nissan plans to take the transmission apart, look at the parts, decide if the damage is caused by abuse or defect. And you pay up front? This does not sound good.
a. Live with the transmission as is.
b. Replace the transmission with a used on. This has got to be less expansive than the Nissan offer.

I know Honda is the same way, they want the customer to secure the tear down charges with the understanding if the damage is not warrantable, the customer will also be liable for putting it back together.
When I worked as a Honda Service Advisor, we came across this many times and IT IS at the dealers discretion to charge for this. We typically only did it when the vehicle was a sporty model or had after-market modifications and we could get a sense of the type of driver we're dealing with.
With Honda, there are service codes that permit the dealer to bill Honda even in the event the claim is denied but the warranty labor codes are a lot less than the amount of a "customer pay" labor time. Techs usually b!tch about this and the Advisor wants more $$$ so they 99% of the time aim for CP diag time.
They know that if you agree to the tear down and they do determine the damage was not a warranty defect, you will most likely opt to replace the parts since your going to be out of pocket the tear down and rebuild labor charges. Your only unexpected expense at that point will be the parts and my bet is, they will try and look like a prince by giving you a "discount" on the parts. The funny thing is, they may actually get you that discount as most parts and service depts are separate so the advisor will "pitch" the parts guy on the idea that this repair hinges on his parts prices.
My suggestion, be there when it is torn down. tell them you want to be at the bench when the trans is taken apart and have a camera handy. At the Honda dealership I was at, the service bay was surgical clean and the bench straight from a medlab. We brought customers in all the time to show them our findings. We had zero to hide.
