Default how can i tell which diff i have?

hey any help with this would be great. i bought a vlsd for my base a long time ago, i had it in and then found out it hummed at like 80 to 83 then it goes away so, i pulled it in the hopes of rebuilding it so now im thinking about a kaaz diff with 3.9fd and all new bearings and seals but now im kinda nerves because when i bought it he said it was a perfect diff and it was off a 6mt. so now that i know he lied about the first part im not to sure about weather or not its a 5auto or a 6mt? this way i can eather sell the diff cuz i need a 6mt to do the 3.9fd or i can order the parts and send my diff out to get done. so please any info would be great

You could count the number of teeth on the main gear. Number of teeth on the pinion gear. Divide.

or

Rotate the tire 3.9 times. The drive shaft should rotate once for a 3.9 ratio.

Neither method is precise.

i know the diff for sure dosnt have 3.9fd its stock and i know its a vlsd i need to find out if it came out of a 6speed z/g or a automatic z/g that way i can buy a kaaz lsd and a 3.9fd cuz if its a auto diff ima sell it to get a 6speed one so i can start my build. also i never built a diff but what would be causeing the humming could it need shims or to reset the backlash?

holy grammar.....

The differential from a manual transmission car will not physically fit into a case with the automatic ring and pinion; the differential from an automatic car will not physically fit into a case with the manual ring and pinion.

If the diff hums, it could be down to any number of things - bad bearings, poor install, bad diff, wrong fluid, etc etc etc

well i called nissan today and they said i should count the number of teeth on the gear 47 for auto and 46 for manual and thanks for all the help and i know my gammer is horrible lol but the reason im doing this is because the diff hums and to rebuild it from nissan would be like the price of a used car so i said f that and go big so..... can any one recommend a place in florida that can do this or ima just send it to kaaz. thanks everyone
