Default Shifer Problem help!

Hello all i have a problem and im wondering if anyone else has encountered this. The problem is with my shifter...When i purchased the car the shifter felt loose. I put the car up on a lift to get under it to see what was going on..Didnt see anything wrong. So my question is what would cause a shifter like in the z to fall down a few inches? i can lift the shifter and **** up about 2 inches let go and it falls back down. I dont even have to push down or anything to go into reverse. Is there some kind of bushing or something that keeps the shifer in its upright position and when reverse is needed something thats spring loaded to push the shifter back up when you put it bnack in neutral or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!

Spelling. It's not just for college.

Why don't you open the shifter boot and check it out?

The reverse spring is probably missing, and/or your guide plate is all messed up. as mentioned, just pop the shifter boot out, and undo the 4 10mm bolts that hold the rubber boot in place...have a look.

Ok, I have the same problem. You have a B&M shifter or NRG shifter. In my case, I have the NRG. What I found was the holding pin around the ball which allows the shifter to pivot had come looose. After disassembling the shifter completely, I was able to see that the little holding pin is just too small and over time comes loose causing the ball to pop out of the holder. Once this happens you can move the ball freely be it up or down or side to side. It becomes very difficult to get into reverse gear. I decided to order the Stillen Short Shifter and it will be here tomorrow. I havent been able to drive my Z as a result of the shifter coming apart. If you really want to try to save your shifter, I would suggest removing the shifter completely and attempting to reinstall the holding pin. It would be a temporary fix, but at least you can drive the car. Do you still have your stock shifter? Tomorrow when I remove the shifter to install the Stillen. I will take pictures of the pin for you.
