Default Thoughts on smoke (vids included).

Ever since I had the OS Giken installed along with z1 2.5" Test-Pipes I have had what I consider excess smoke out of the exhaust. At first I thought it was just the new test-pipes causing the smoke, but it seems to be continuing.

Before: Sorry only vid I have. Very little smoke if any. This was with kintetix Test-Pipes.

After: Current Mods. As you can see it is considerable.

I guess I am a little worried. The car seems to be every bit as strong as before (actually quicker due to losing 23 pounds of excess weight taken off the drivetrain). The car burns 1/2-3/4 qt. of oil per 3000, which is the same as it has since I bought it. I am pretty hard on the car, but only put ~200 miles a week at most on it.

Thoughts?

If it's not burning any more oil than before, I wouldn't sweat it. Is there anything different with the internals of the two brands of test pipes? You've also added a tune since the two vids, no? Maybe running richer than pre-tune?

Same tune.....all I swapped was the test-pipes. They are either 1/4-1/2 inch ID bigger than the old ones. I guess it could still be the coating that they put on them initially. I have only driven ~1k miles since the install. It smells of fuel no doubt about it, but at times it smells a bit of oil too. I just wasn't sure so I thought I would look for some input.

The only time I notice smoke on my car is when I first start it up. Did you drive the car around before taking the first vid vs. starting the car up for the first time in the second?

The car was already warm......I had driven it for ~30 mins prior to stopping for the quick vid in my driveway.

What i remember was white smoke is caused by engine coolant/Antifreeze being processed in the combustion chamber of the engine. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Its actually more of a black/blueish.....its just the light that makes it look lighter. You are right about the white. I think mine is mostly just excess fuel and a bit off oil (the blueish).

I think that too.
Black is pretty much fuel / air mixture.

blue smoke is primarily from internal engine wear ( Edit: Not 100% sure about this tho) .

I think this weekend I am going to take the intake, plenum and such apart and see if I am perhaps getting some blow-by creating the smoke. I have been meaning to take the grinder and smooth off the castings on the upper and lower plenum anyway. Now I just have a better excuse to get a burst of motivation.

Isn't better mess with plenum when you ready to go get a tune?

I am not porting anything......just cleaning up the casting flaws that are there from the factory. I don't think it will make any difference in the tune. Obviously the car is pretty rich all of thus sudden.........when the weather cools I might take it in for a "check up" tune.

Nope......just maximize airflow in its stock configuration and lower turbulence within the plenum a bit.

Anyone else have any ideas to the cause of the smoke that I might not be thinking of?

Honestly, I wouldn't think too much of it. You're not burning oil and the engine is running strong, I say give your TP some more breaking time.

I am going to keep a very close eye on the oil level. I just changed it a week ago.......we'll see if the oil consumption pics up.
