gearbox problem

Thee bearing in my rear g/box housing turns when cold, and makes a whirring noise for a few mins until warmed up.

A new housing is £577 !! ($770 ish) anyone got an idea to aviod this cost?

have an experienced mechanic actually look at it and tell you what is wrong (if anything) with it?
