Default Transmission or clutch?



So im driving to work yesterday when all of the sudden i have no 5th or 6th. I dont smell anything but 1 through 4th work perfectly fine. Dealer is trying to tell me is the clutch and not the transmission. and of course they are saying is the clutch, since the extended warranty doesn't cover it. I have burnt a clutch on a previous car before so i know what the smell is like, and there was no smell what so ever....

Opinions?

it's the pressue plate. The fingers on it have worn un-evenly and created a situation where you can use some gears and not others. Clutch disc probably doesn't have much life on it either. Had the same issue on a truck of mine a few years back.

Why would you be able to use some gears and not the others? The clutch is an on or off type of thing.

Curious to why.... not arguing as i know i could be wrong.

What do you mean have no 5th or 6th gears? You can drive in 1 2 3 and 4 but you cannot shift to 5 or 6?

Yeah, they will go in. But when I hit the gas is like the car is in neutral.

well thats a different problem altogether...does the stick pop back like the tranni is kicking itself out of gear? or does it just stay where you put it and you don't get the engagement?

Cruise around in 3rd.... or 4th or something... punch it a bit....

Does the rpms jump up before the car actually get some extra momentum or does the tach skick in sync with vehicle speed

If the first... slipping clutch... but you should notice a slipping clutch in all gears but more obvious at low RPMS [LOWER GEARS(5/6 GEAR)]

First 4 gears are fine, that's what's so weird

i just had the trans replaced in my car.... it was nothing like that... it would grind when i tried to put it in gear even though the clutch was all the way in.

Your transmission is bad.

All the pressure plate does is press the clutch disk against the flywheel to engage the transmission. Gear selection makes no difference on this function.

Yep, agreed with Jcat... I just got my gearbox replaced over the weekend (was due to bad synchro's, not the same as your problem ofcourse)...

Yeah its the clutch, but they are going to replace the transmission for me anyways since i told them its been grinding for a while. Now i have to decide what clutch to go with since im not going to do the stock one

do you have to pay for the clutch & flywheel? how about labor?

I had my tranny replaced about 2 or 3 months ago and the grind from shifting is still there. Just last night it feels like the clutch is definitely slipping. I am just over 30k on my 07 Z and the clutch/tranny been acting like this for quite a while. It is the worst when I drive a lot but this is my weekend car so I seldom drive it a lot so it was bearable only driving it only once a week. I recently starting driving my Z more because my other car is in the shop and the grinding is getting worse and worse. I'm pretty sure that it's the clutch and not the transmission. I'm going bring it in tomorrow and have them test drive it again. Hope they will replace my clutch for free because clutch should not go bad only just 30K. I'm pretty sure it's not something I have caused since I drive my 240sx much more than the Z and put my 240sx but I baby my Z. Wish me luck.

I'm gonna do some research on different clutches before I pull the trigger, and yes I have to pay for everything it sucks

well i haven't heard of only the 5th and 6th gears only going out....well if you replace the clutch and flywheel make sure you get everything else with it for reliability...

pressure plate, throwout bearing, nismo pilot bearing, hex head flywheel bolts, stainless steel clutch line, steel pivotball.

those are necessities. other things that you can get that effect the driveability:

short throw shifter (ex. autotecnika), shift **** (better feel for gears when shifting), transmission mount (less excessive vibration and better shifts), clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder.

Another thing that you can do if you are somewhat mechanically savy is you can re-align your shift gate (shifter to transmission plate)

Im gonna contact Jotech tomorrow which is a local shop in my area and see what they recommend, i just wanna get it fixed. I dont have $3,000 too put into a clutch right now, including labor and everything

But at the same time, theres no way im going back to stock.
