I just got around to putting fluids in my car. So I topped off the transmission with M1 75w-90... It didn't even cross my mind until after I was cleaning up, but I checked the back of the label and it is GL5. I went back to Pepboys and they do not stock GL4.

Any thoughts, I see that Royal Purple is both GL4 and GL5 compatible.

I have been reading that some people say the GL5 will eat away the yellow metals in the tranny, then other people say that new formulas will not eat away the yellow metals.

Any one have any links or additional information.

Use OEM. I really wanted to use name brand fluids but I changed my mind after reading this:

My new Z came with motul trans (or some other) fluid but it sux and my shifting is crappy. I changed my old Z's MTF with OEM and I was completely happy with it. I'll do the same for my new Z.

I use motul in my trans and rear diff and couldn't be more pleased..car shifts and drives perfectly and I think it actually helped with the "notchyness"

I have motul in my 'new' Z and it sux hardcore. I'm going with OEM when I recoup more funds.

I had to visit several pepboys to get enough GL4.
GL5 is not recommended...

Amsoil is great in the Spring, Summer, and Autumn. But in the Winter, its not going to be as smooth till you've been driving for a bit and the fluid warms up. The 1-2 shift will be very notchy or grind if you try to force it, when first starting out. Solution = double clutch it into 2nd or rev a lil higher then you normally would and slip it into 3rd. OEM fluid is the most trouble free for our trans, but I do not drive my car after October so no worry for me. I like the longer change interval and better basestock of Amsoil.

Sorry, I posted that I was using motul trans fluid. I'm not.

It's actually redline in there and it sux. I mean, it seems to work ok when the tranny gets hot. I imagine that would be great for long track runs but OEM is MUCH better for just driving the Z.

I say go OEM if you drive your car a lot. Moreover, the Nissan MTF should be ok for track use as long as you change it frequently (before and/or after track days depending on what you do exactly).

As an update I'm using Motul gearoil. It's still not as good as when I had OEM but its better than Redline. Nissan, unfortunately, does not make anymore tranny fluid for our car.
