Default Changed my trans fluid, now it grinds 5th

My car just turned over 25000 miles. For me that means its time to change all the fluids. Castrol Syntec in the motor and Valvoline 75-90 synthetic in the transmission and rear end. Anyways the transmission fluid that came out looked brand new! I filled it back up with about 3.6-3.7 quarts. It used to make a small clunk going into 5h and a grind every now and then (maybe once a week). Now it grinds 5th bad when its cold and I have to try to make it grind when its hot. Is it the fluid or time to take it to the dealer? Thanks

Sean

Im pretty sure I got the right stuff. Its at my shop and ill check again in the morning. And the transmission is at the right fluid level. It was lifted up flat on a car lift, not a jack, and filled to the fill hole level.

you need to drain that stuff and replace it with GL-4 fluid. Motul, Redline, and others make gl-4 MT fluids.

This is what you got, and it is NOT good for the trans. ( but just fine for the rear end )

cold tranny's tend to do that? i would be more worried if the tranny was warmed up and did that consistantly.

My tranny also has been doing the same thing for 2nd gear. And It's been a pain to shift when it's cold. Really hard.

Any recommendations on fluid I can go get so I can get this drained out?

well if that is normal then i guess i don`t have to worry to much because thats the only time it does that, and once it warmed up its smooth sailing.

Update...I filled the trans with GM syncromesh. Its the same stuff the S2000 people rave about. It is a GL4. I havent really driven enough to see if it fixed it. Ill let you guy no tomorrow when I get a cold start on it. But overall it seems better so far.

^^ Possible, there are other people who put GL-4/GL-5 compatible fluid in and have the same issues.

it's probably better to use oem nissan MTF! i switched back to it after having a sh*tty time with redline *GL4* MT90. look at my past posts. if the temp dropped below 40 the first shift of the day would be difficult to engage. and shifts were generally rough compared to oem stuff. my gas mileage also went down 2mpg after i started using MT90. one thing i noticed is that nissan MTF smells completely different than MT90. perhaps the additive package is completely different. i almost thought nissan MTF smelled like a GL5 type of gear oil and had to double check. i believe that this type of transmission is sensitive to the viscosity of oil as well. make sure you use the exact spec of oil!
