Default ls2 conversion (questions)

im looking into the ls2 conversion and been calling around for prices on engine and tranmission. the best ive found was 8k for everything w/ 50k on it straight out of a GTO. would it be cheaper to get a brand new create motor for $6500, but then i would have to buy all the extra stuff for it and a tranmisson. I know the hinson supercar kit comes with everything u need to drop it in, but would there be alot of useless stuff i would be throwing off the motor coming out of the GTO that the kit is already providing?

I am in the process of putting my parts together for the swap as well. Are you going to do the swap in your garage or pay a shop to do it? You should look at g35 driver and search for SnyperZ. He did an LS swap in his garage plus added an 88mm turbo to the setup. Havok_LS2 also did a build that was documented on here. There aren't many Z LS2 swaps running around, but you will be able to find some good information as well.

I would try to find the full motor and tranny preferably finding a entire car. You might be to able to install a LS1 as well which may be easier to find.

Depending on where you live you may not be able to put in a crate motor. For VA I have to swap in a motor that is the same year or newer. Plus you have to use all the emissions equipment. If you're letting a shop do it you might as well let them source the combo as they would know what you need.

ive been calling a couple places for ls2 but i could only find engines that have around 40-50k on it. i have 43k on my car now, and i dont think its worth it to put a engine that has more miles on it then the one i have now. I might have to look at ls3 for more engines that have less mileage on them and it will pass emission because it came out of a 08 vette. is there any difference from putting a ls1 ls2 or ls3 in w/ the hinson supercar kit?

I went with the LS1 because in the end I could put a supercharger on it or build a high compression motor for about the same price as used LS3/7's go for.

Each his own though.

Quamen what year LS1 did you end up putting in? I have been able to find an LS1 from the same year vettes as my car (03). That's the earliest engine I can use. Plus they are easier to find vs. a gto drop out. Did you put in a new cam? What heads did you end up using?

OP I wouldn't worry about the number of miles on the motor unless it's like 100k. Either way the shop doing your install should put in a new oil pump and new gaskets before putting the motor in the car. Since this is a major modification to the car, plus it is very expensive the added security of replacing the parts while the motor is out is priceless.

I went with an 00 motor from a Vet that an old timer in Michigan just had rebuilt to put in a Chevelle. For now I am running stock heads and cam. After going through all the revisions of my car over the last five years I just wanted something to drive that was fun. I would like to do a 14:1 bottom end this winter with heads/cam/intake manifold and E85 if anything.

All my friends say I should put a cam in it but I think I will be better off doing it is a package so everything works well together. Plus it will give me more time to choose wisely.

Cool. Is this your daily? I would be interested in reading how you got your car state compliant and how you dealt with the ecu/guages etc..... That's the non-sexy stuff that is all so important.

Ahh see that's awesome since your county doesn't do emissions. Since I live in the republic of VA I have strict guidelines. I can't wait to see your build thread.

I was just in Virginia Beach two weeks ago on a road trip and I really liked the area. You never know what the future holds... maybe a move in the future!

Va Beach is a nice town. You will like it on the east coast. I used to live in the mid-west (Mo) and it's night and day!

I have been toying with this thought for a long time and the only thing that scares me is the wiring and the exhaust system to make it legal in my state. I really think that going turbo... single or twin would be so much easier but we shall see.
