Default Engine Tap on Cold start

I noticed an engine Tap getting worse only on cold starts and very faint at idle, etc... I was thinking a timing chain camshaft sprocket was tapping, and i was right. the tap only last for around a heartbeat then it goes away and you only hear if you listen closely. because when the sprocket is hot nothing sticks but when cold the gears stick. So I have brought it into my work Suddeth Automotive In Columbia SC. and im not working on it but a fellow co-worker got the job. So first he removed all the intake including upper and lower plenum and vavle covers and belts. etc.. off and out the way. then proceeded to take off the cover. It turns out that a sprocket has gone bad but as we waited for all the parts to come in cause we ordered everything so nothing will go bad and we have to go back in the block. but as they started to put everything back together with the new parts we found there was also a busted camshaft. so even though cams dont have to show equivalent wear. we are replacing all four cams. they should be in tomorrow actually. My car threw seven or more codes (system to lean bank1, knock sensor bank1, camshaft position sensor bank1, Transmission control Module, Crankshaft sensor, random multiple misfire) and a couple others. I see how most of these codes could be thrown due to what all were having fixed but what would cause a cam to bust?

BTW below are some pictures of what my car looked like about a week ago. i havent been back into work because of classes and stuff but if everything goes well it should be back on the road atleast by next Tuesday.

This is a salvage car correct? It has been tapping for 4 months.

I'll get pictures of the cam when i go to work tomorrow. &&& to David, that was an old post, that wasn't long after i got the car and i was trying to figure out the problem. and turns out the car isnt a Katrina car but it does have a salvage title cause of flood damage but because i know some history of the previous owner i think it was insurance fraud.
