2004 350z Engine Failure
I can't remember all the full details as its not my car (I have a 2010 370z) as it is my Dad's car. Not exactly sure of the cause. It has always burned oil for as long as my dad has had it (my 370z doesn't burn a drop) and it shouldn't have been low (oil presure was fine) but the dealer did say the oil was very dirty.
The car has 135k miles on it. The engine is totally fux0rd and apparently the cost of a new long block is like 7k and to completely fix the car its looking like it would be around 10k. Now my dad is having to decide if it makes sense to try to get it fixed or sell it as is and by a new 370 so I was hoping to get some opinions on this.
First off can the car be fixed for cheaper? Anyone know what a used engine for an engine swap goes for these days? Do you guys think its worth fixing it or better to just sell it in its current state?
The car is otherwise in very good condition so how much do you guys think he could get selling it with a fux0rd engine?

i would get it fixed, your not gonna get much for a non runner, you can find a pretty complete motor for 2k or less i think, and have a reputable shop do the work if you dont want to do it yourself, maybe a performance shop will be cheaper than a dealership, not sure, good luck with all of that situation,im sure the members will get you the info you need to make up your mind
sorry to hear that...since what mileage the engine started to burn oil? i have a 04.5 myself at 70,500 miles it doesnt burn a single drop..then again i would do an engine swap with a used vq35de engine
well if its always burned oil, then it could have been low. Good oil pressure doesn't necessarily mean good oil volume
does it need a new longblock? perhaps just a shortblock + misc items? No way to know without tearing it apart
check your local forum, I'm sure you can find a member selling a motor if you're a bit patient

It looks like my dad is gonna go with an engine swap from another 350z with about 70k miles on it (his has 125k as I was 10k off b4). The dealer can do it for around $3600. Rebuilding the engine was just going to be too expensive ($10k) so he opted to go this route instead. The dealer will give him a 90 day warranty on the engine I believe.
I think $3700 is pretty reasonable. Because of the mileage the car is worth under 10k so it didn't make sense spending more than the car is worth to fix it. I know if it was me I would definitely have just gone with a new 370z if it was going to cost over 5k to repair.
I sure am happy that my 370z doesn't burn oil at all. Before my 370z I had a subaru impreza (non turbo) and that thing also burned oil from the day I got it as well and its engine failed @ 50k miles (luckily still in warranty).
