Awesome build. Gotta love the ol' JZ's.
Funny enough, there is a bunch of buzz over JZ's bolting up to our gearboxes as an alternative to the expensive V160 or the tractor-like R154. I see you already extended the shifter so I guess you made up your mind, but did ya think about keeping the 6 speed?

i used the R154 because it was cheap to be honest...but i would love to use the Z trans if there was a cheap and easy way! lol

Nothin wrong with that. The R154 will handle 750+ RWHP easily. Looks like it was originally from a Aristo/Supra without the external tripod (earlier years). The rear seals like to leak from pressure buildup but the earlier style vents through the shifter.

People, stop talking about the old shop and let's enjoy the new build.

An R154 is a million times better than the garbage W58 found on the USDM non turbo Supra's, SC300's, and IS300.

I saw this little do-dad but I'm not 100% sure how that works and if some kind of spacer is required for the flywheel/pressure plate to make up for the adapter.

What're you using for motor mounts? Are you going through the CANBUS system to get the stock gauge cluster to work or are you plugging them up with aftermarket ones?

The harder part is actually sourcing the correct flywheel/pressure plate/clutch disk combo. There are quite a few people that make the adapter rings for the bell housing.

Allegedly, a Toyota 3VZ-E flywheel, 350Z clutch disk, 3S-GTE pressure plate from MR2 combo will work with a few mods to the flywheel itself.

I believe with proper flywheel spacer, 350z clutch/flywheel would work. I was in contact with the guy who designed the adapter. I will have to copy what he emailed and post it here.

Let us know what he says. I sent him an email as well, but I've yet to get a reply

Sure when I get home to tonight I will copy the emails. He hasn't replied to my last email but we were in contact at one point a few weeks back.

Here is the more important info from our emails.

Hey Mike,

I've been flooded with questions for this swap, which is why it has been taking me so long to respond.

There are a few different ways to approach the dilemma of getting this transmission on to this engine and finding a clutch system that works with everything..

First off with the Z33/Z34 transmission the splines on the input shaft start alot further back than a normal manual gear box, which means a few things.

1) The splines on the clutch disc have to reach the splines on the input shaft(Obviously) in order to get this whole Idea to workout.

2) With the addition of the adapter plate you have an additional distance to cover.

3)cost

4)hold a decent amount of horse power.

There are a few different options that people have thought up over the years:

Make a new flywheel that bolts to the 2JZ crank and spaces out the clutch disc the right amount to get proper clutch disc engagement, or use an automatic 2JZ flexplate coupled with a spacer that holds a button flywheel onto it that gets the proper amount of spacing that also keeps a decently low moment of Inertia.

I think going with the later idea is probably the cheapest option so far, until of course someone ultimately makes an after market flywheel specifically for this setup.

One way to Get this transmission in and working is with the Tilton twin disc setup for no other reasons than it being lighter, it has a much lower moment of Inertia, and it is able to hold more power than a typical single disc setup. I am planning on making this spacer in the next two weeks and hopefully testing this setup to see how easy I can make it for everyone else.

but again I think the best recipe for bolting a Z33/Z34 trans to a JZ would be:

Automatic Flexplate
Intermediate Spacer
Button flywheel (7.25")
multi-disc clutch system/basket
Throwout bearing.

Also you will need to shorten up the shifter linkage bracket and the actual shifter linkage itself.
Transmission mount.
Drive shaft

Initially you will be putting up more money for the clutch system but at a fraction of the cost as a typical V160 clutch setup..

let me know if you have any questions,

Thanks,
Brett

i started looking into this some, but im a little scared with reliability...looking like id still end up having like 3g or more in it and still not be able to handle extream HP...im thinking for a built 2jz, there is no other option except the v160 :/ ....it really sucks that the V160 costs so much but really, you get what you pay for....4g for the trans and somthing like 2g or more for a clutch setup to handle over 1000 wheel BLOWS :/

as for motor mounts, NSN Garage is building me a set of new mounts since the ones built by the last shop were very rough and just scared me...

NSN has also been building intake manifolds and fuel rails for 350z's, supras, and eclipses (as well as getting into alot of other motor types)...so i am going to have them build me a fuel rail, intake mani and im thinking about a fuel cell as well....
