Default Daily driver flywheel

I am having my tranny swapped soon and heard that install cost for a flywheel at the same time would be much cheaper. What flywheel would you guys suggest for a daily driver, but still a noticable difference. I dont want to have to watch the rpm's constantly in stop and go traffic.

Default Flywheel

I put the Nismo lightweight flywheel (23 pounds) in my Gcoupe to replace the stock 38 pound unit, plus the Nismo clutch. I drive the car in LA freeway traffic frequently.

The sound difference is almost imperceptible, and the response is very definitely superior with a 15 pound weight reduction. The clutch take up with the nismo unit is also a big improvement in my view. It is very street civil and really a "no brainer" choice.

The next step down is an EVO at 18 pounds and then the JWT at 14 pounds. If you want to go wild there is the Tilton at 8lbs. If you want civility, forget the Tilton. Great unit, but an animal to deal with as a daily driver.

If I had it to do over again, I would think hard about the JWT. I do not think there is any question that if you have a 6mt you MUST go at least to the Nismo lightweight flywheel and clutch, as long as you are down there doing the work anyway. The real question is do you go to JWT (I don't think the spread from Nismo to EVO is worth fussing about).
To know that, get a ride with someone that has it, listen to it at a stoplight, and if you can, drive it to see if the trade off for performance is worth the driving characteristics in polite society. that is a very personal evaluation that only you can make.

Hope that helps a bit. Good luck.

How nessessary is a new clutch to go with the new flywheel? Would it be bad or cause problems to stay with the oem clutch?

AFAIK the Tilton cannot be installed by itself..its meant to be integrated with their clutch.

I have not weighed a flywheel alone yet, but the total weight for clutch and flywheel was around 45 lbs for OEM.....7 kbs would be a awfully light OEM clutch, so Fy By's number of around 28 sounds right, with stock clutch weighing around 17, which also sounds about right to me.

I didn't buy it because it wasn't as available. But now I am glad I got the JWT for easier maintenance, etc. Someone listed some advantages in another thread.

Thumbs up JUN

I love my JUN flywheel...It is only 14lbs(I think?) and it is very streetable. It matches the JWT in weight but it's chromoly so it doesn't have to be resurfaced. It is very responsive also. I highly recommend it. SGP racing has them

Remember...

It is not the flywheel that causes problems for daily drive.. but it is the clutch..

the clamping force on the NISMO clutch is about 1080kg and on the JWT clutch is 1160kg... They both use organic/copper disk's and are not nearly as grabby as the cerametallic disks on the Tilton clutch.

Either way you go.. NISMO or JWT flywheel you will be very happy with daily driving... With either clutch too... They can be slipped so rush hour traffic is no problem...

For those of you with FI or the weekend racer... we will have the final part for the Tilton Flywheel's to start shipping ...

remember we have JWT / NISMO / TILTON flywheel / clutches available on http://www.performancenissanparts.com

Default I have the JUN Flywheel

I really like the flywheel and it is with the stock clutch. It has been installed for over 5 months now with no problems.

Still using the stock clutch, with no problems. Do not need an aftermarket stock.

the jwt is better because you do not have to resurface it and you do have to resurface the jun. the jwt has a replaceable face. neither should need maintanence for at least 60K miles so wo cares anyways. get the one that is readily available to you.
