Default More Low End Power?

I was wondering if anyone could explain how to increase my low end horsepower. I've now got the most sluggish car out of all my buddies, and I figured out it's because my low end power isn't as fantastic as everyone else's. I basically have to play catch up with them.

I'm not running a lot of engine mods, just a MD plenum, a K&N drop in filter and I'm running a Borla catback with a Magnaflow Xpipe. I am running 4.08 gears and the previous owner put in the VLSD diff. I'm lowered a bit, but I don't think that's going to slow me off the line any though.

Anyone know ways of increasing my lower end power without boosting? I'm going to eventually boost, but my finances need to settle a bit first. (A year or two down the line)

Maybe a tune and a lighter flywheel and wheels would help. Not sure if underdriven crank pulley really makes some difference.

What kind of cars are your buddies driving anyways?

lightweight flywheel will help the accelertion some, but like bmurray said get that puppy tuned

I think you've confused horsepower and torque…you want more torque

all your modifications are geared (ha! PtP) towards high-rev range performance with the exception of the FD swap.

your intake, plenum spacer and exhaust are manufactured to give more flow in the near-redline rev range. The OEM setup flows fine in your lower RPM range. I wouldnt be surprised if you've lost low end torque because of the modifications.

A tune would be a good place to start and after that I would look into (and save up) for FI.

What year is your Z?
As others have said,A TUNE will help in getting low end power.
If you can do it in your area,I'd add HFC's before the tune.
Lightweight wheels will help.
By the way,whats the deal about,"keeping up with my friends"?

bealljk made a good point that torque plays a bigger role in your off the line acceleration then your HP. as others mentioned a tune would be very important since you have made some intake and exhaust mods. I think that a lightweight flywheel could also help you get off the line quicker.

It's an 03 Touring and I forgot to mention the stage 3 clutch. What kind of tune would you guys suggest?

I'm now having to keep up with an 05 6.0 gto, an 07 SC mustang GT, an 06 STi, and now I'm having trouble keeping ahead of the 06 evo.

I'll definitely look into the lightweight flywheel.

Anything else?

Try switching cars with one of your buddys, and see how well your car does. If your still having to play catchup, then it's the driver.....

4.08 gears should make you pull pretty hard from a dig, and in general. This car lacks torque, period. A lighter flywheel will help with acceleration in 1st gear, not so much in any other; it will make the car easier to drive though too (easier to rev match/downshift/heel-toe).

Even built NA VQ35DE's typically only see torque in the ~260 range, and that's with varying amounts of horsepower. If you want torque, you're going to need to boost it.

thats all good and well except it ignores that in those lower gears torque is multiplied as well negating all there calculations............ it alsodosnt take inertia into account at all

In with an update. I drove my buddy's evo, and smoked my car.... I walked my own car. I also drove the mustang and the STi, but I'm 99.9% sure it was me on those 2 because of stock clutches when I'm really used to the stage 3.
I'm going to try and save to boost it, but is there anything that can give a significant jump to my torque?

I respectfully disagree regarding the plenum spacer losing tq/low end. If its uber thick maybe...but not the standard size. I do certainly agree with the tune part. I pulled this from an older thread...(non-rev up)

If any of those cars even have basic bolt ons, then they're just plain more powerful. They're mostly FI or large displacement motors. What do you expect?

its not torque beating you the evo and sti both have WAY more traction then you do and easy to tune for more power upping boost gets you way more then bolt ons.

my bet is they simply make more power then you do,not downlow just more power period. depending on the year and engine mustang it just got way more power plain and simple if a newer 5.0 stock destroys your power even if it is heavier.
