Default Tranny or clutch problem?

Hello,
I have a 2005 35th Anniversary edition Z with ~80k miles. 6 speed.

I have been noticing an issue that is pretty weird, I do not know what would cause this besides the clutch or tranny.

Basically when I drive and change up a gear, say 2nd to 3rd gear and then I hit the gas, my RPMS will shoot up but I will not increase speed. After 1-3 seconds, my RPMS will then jump back down and It will drive normal.

This happens even more easily when I am in say 6th gear, and just step on it. It also happens more easily If I try to accelerate more rapidly on gear change. Rather than a light, smooth shift and slowly press the gas.

I feel like it may be the clutch is slipping or not engaging properly. Also someone had told me the tranny may be going out.

I wanted to ask here before bringing it in. Anyone have any suggestions?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
-Corey

Corey, everything you mentioned is the exact description of a slipping clutch.

Thank you for the response. I greatly appreciate this. It makes me feel much more comfortable about the issue. Perhaps I'll think about getting a new clutch within the year. Probably stick with stock, as I hear some aftermarket clutch/flywheels make a weird noise.

A clutch this bad will not last much longer, (certainly not for a year) and will leave you stranded. You need to attend to it right away.

Typically it’s a case of a completely worn out clutch disk, but it could also be a collapsed diaphragm spring in the clutch cover. Moot point though, as these two are always changed as a pair. The Z has a hydraulic clutch linkage and as such is self-adjusting so that’s not usually the problem. Also since this was not caught in time, the flywheel will also have to be replaced.

Thank you for the info. I knew I came to the right forum. I will have to plan on getting this done sooner then. Currently I am only driving ~1 mile to work everyday.

I will continue doing research on this topic to figure out what exactly I am wanting. Again thank you for pointing me in the right direction. A friend had told me it was my tranny and made me think otherwise.
