Default Questions: DIY 2008 6 Spd manual clutch and master/slave cylinder swap.

Hi,

I have a few questions that I couldn't find in a search on these boards.

My son has a 2008 350z base model with 6 speed manual transmission and 70k miles.

The clutch pedal has been getting stuck half way up frequently for months now and the clutch is also starting to slip.

The South Miami Nissan dealer says everything needs to be replaced. They want $3428 to replace the master and slave clutch cylinders and the clutch and flywheel. This is double what my son and I where estimating.

My son and I will most likely do the job ourselves now. I've always worked on my own cars out of warranty and the usual maintenance and have a good set of mechanics tools.

Is there anything in particular that I should have to make the job easier?

My impact wrench only has 200 ft.lb working torque and from what I'm reading is inadequate?

Although I replaced a transmission before I do not have a transmission jack. How heavy is the transmission on the 350z? Thinking about getting one of the inexpensive transmission jacks from Harbor Freight since I doubt I will ever remove a transmission again... Getting to old for the heavy stuff.

I was also reading about larger size swivel sockets which I don't have. I have all manner of socket and universals and some smaller swivel sockets to 13mm but nothing larger. Are the swivel sockets necessary and do they have to be impact swivel sockets?

My jack stands only go to 17" is that adequate or should I get some taller ones?

The dealer is quoting $1200 in labor out of the $3400 for the entire job. I don't know their rate but figure its probably $120/hr so they are saying around 10 hours for the clutch and master and slave cylinder.

How long should I expect it to take doing it myself?

Forgot to do a search on this but should we replace or rebuild the master and slave cylinders and do they need to be bleed somehow and is it easy to do? Do I need any special tools or equipment to bleed if necessary?

One last thing... There are quite a few recommendations for performance clutches. He doesn't race but drives spirited. What clutch flywheel do you recommend that won't break the bank?

Thanks for any help...

I'll chime in only because I am going to replace my Master & Slave cylinders as well as the clutch and flywheel this weekend. There are a couple of venders here on the forum that sell a kit which include the JWT clutch and light weight single mass flywheel along with some other freebies. I use CZP because they are a great and reliable vendor. JWT is a popular clutch/flywheel combo amongst Z owners, myself included.

As for installing all of it....I plan on it taking me 10 hours from start to finish replacing everything. I'll be using a lift as well.

I purchaed the South Bend Stage 2 Daily kit for my Z, came with the upgraded CSC,SS clutch lines, fluids and Master. Ran me $1475 shipped. I got the 19lbs flywheel which is pretty nice for a daily.

You will HAVE to buy the upgraded CSC and Master or you will be doing this job again odwn the road soon.I got all my parts from ZspeedPerformance which is another vendor on this forum.Great service from them.

On the jack question, I seen another member on here post pics of his transmission on a Harbor Frieght Trans Jack.If its for a one time use I dont see the big deal cutting costs on that.

BTW, my labor ran under $700.00 for everything,so that shop is definitely BSing on the labor cost.

Good luck.
Good luck.

get aftermarket parts and find a transmission shop to do the work, or if you do it yourself the trans is not that hard to drop, getting all the bolts out takes the longest. when it comes to the clutch and flywheel you will need a allen wrench socket thing on a breaker bar and a pry bar to hold the flywheel in place. you will spend more time getting the trans down than replacing the clutch.... the master is a little trickier because you have to be a contortionist to get under the dash.

Tucker if you need help holla at me, especially if you are going to jack junkies

Travis if you're free anything Friday and wouldn't mind giving me a hand that would be killer. I'll be at Jack Junkies from 12p-8p on Friday. If I don't finish by then I have a couple hours Saturday morning reserved.
