Default Rear axle problem - busted snap ring

Last Monday I lost all my slip, vdc, abs all at once. Every light came on at the same time like a Christmas tree. When it was on the hoist we spotted the problem. The driver rear axle has a snap ring on the end of the axle to keep it from traveling in and out of the wheel hub. This had broken and the axle had shifted half an inch away from the diff toward the rim. It was just enough to mis-align the sensor with the axle sensor band and shut down the whole system. Apparently they have a tendency to break when it is -43 degrees celsius outside !!!

just to satisfy my curiosity -- were you driving normally, driving aggressively, or all-out launching the car?

The road was very icy and the SLIP light came on probably 4 or 5 times in a row when I was trying to get across the intersection. I wasn't giving at any real throttle because the computer was controlling my power. About 20 seconds after that all the lights came on. The dealer said they had seen a few break in extreme cold.

wow. that's kind of disappointing. it broke simply due to temperature, even while under relatively little stress.

thank goodness it doesn't get quite that cold here.

sorry to hear about your situation.

Luckily the splines for the axle/hub stayed engaged and the axle did not move out enough to damage anything. I was a little dissapointed myself that this could happen....but we haven't had this kind of cold for about 10 years.

I wish I was there for the winter too!!! Maybe some day I'll have my car on a trailer behind a bigass motorhome rollin down to hang
for the winter months. Maybe by then it will be a 550Z on the trailer.

Some of the manufacturers come up here to do their cold weather testing on their new models. See what breaks in these temps.
