LSD Differential In Non LSD Model
BEFORE anyone said anything I've looked up all the threads or at least i think i have and done countless research but can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for so bare with me
just a simple question, my z is a base model with non lsd and I'm changing out my differential and I'm putting in an LSD i mean might as well right?
anyways i see a lot of different serial numbers on differentials so I'm just wondering do these matter if I'm putting an lsd in non lsd or can i put any differential on my car? in example if i find an lsd from an 05 will it work on my 04? or do i have to search for a specific serial number that fits my 04 manual trans non lsd?

I just did this swap a few weeks ago on my Z. First let me say this, BEST thing I have done to my car!
To my knowledge all years will fit. I think the only differences are the gearing between an AT and MT car.
You would be changing the entire pumpkin right? If so it is a simple bolt-on. If you are opening your pumpkin to change the diff you need the vsld stubs also.
From personal experience, just buy a VSLD in a pumpkin already. I changed the fluid, added bushing inserts and bolted right up. Took a few hours with a buddy taking our time with it.

thanks so much for the help! What pros did you see from switching out the non LSD to the LSD?Also is LSD and VLSD the same thing?

There is a little more to it than that. It is true that all pumpkins fit the same and from what I remember that may even be true 350 vs 370??
BUT there is a difference in stub shafts between the VLSD and base. The passenger side stub shaft on the VLSD is longer. On top of that, there are a couple of minor differences between the exact length of them and the location of the circlip groove. Nissan played some games with them midyear a couple of times. There is a thread around here somewhere. Look for the guy that had his stub shafts pull out (?)
Even if you do the research you may end up with a small surprise. This all depends on how your project is planned out if it effects you much. Worst case is that you buy one stub shaft you had not planned on. To top that off you may end up returning it for the correct one a second time.
If you share a little more what your plan is I may be able to help but most of my advice will point back to threads already here that we all discussed. 1.5 years back on a detailed job, memory will be a little fuzzy...
I read again and SQuaLZ touched on the stub shaft briefly, but just be warned it may not end up as straight forward as you think. I think my comments may help you still...

I used Redline for the fluid and the bushings still looked good so I bought the Whitline bushing inserts which feels good. The diff feels pretty solid under hard acceleration but no annoying vibration you would get with solid bushings.

Even after they corrected it the extra shaft they sent me was a variation on the correct length and one side of my diff has more play in and out based on the width of the circlip groove but it works fine. The major part is long vs. short.

Thanks so much guys! I'm actually the guy who's stubs pulled out it's actually just the passenger that's doing it but I'm tired of dealing with it I think a part inside the differential got damaged which is why it's coming out so easy so I figured this would be the best excuse to upgrade to an LSD which I always wanted to do because I'm buying the whole pumpkin with the stubs already installed in them. I found a differential from a 05 g35 local so I emailed the seller hoping it's an LSD I did some research and found that the 05 g35 6 speed came with an LSD but I emailed him just to make sure cause I don't want to wait a week to get it delivered or pay up too $100 of shipping when I can just pick one up locally I miss driving my car!
Anyway I don't plan on tracking the car whatsoever I never have and never will I barely even speed lol! It's mostly a daily driven show car so just getting places without problem is my concern and since I'm buying a differential why not just upgrade, I mean I always wanted one anyway lol!

Does anyone know what a "posi" differential is? The seller locally emailed back saying it's a posi differential,
It's from an 05 6spd g35 not sure what package.
About 4 yrs ago i went from base open diff to 4.08 gears with a nismo limited slip. Completely different animal. The nismo is very noisy though. The kit i bought came with everything needed to do the swap.
Did you do the swap yourself or have a shop do it? If a shop did it, how much did they charge you? I have an appt to get a Quaife ATB LSD installed in my 2005 Base and the price I was quoted seems a bit high.
me and a buddy did it, he did a detailed write up on it with pics... let me see if i can find it
Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, in order to do this myself, I'd need to acquire about $400 worth of tools (maybe more). For just a little more than that, I can leave this in the hands of professionals.
