Default Oil Pressure Gauge Faulty Reading

At least I hope it's reading faulty.

When I turn the ignition to 'ON', the oil pressure gage jumps completely off scale on the high side. When I start the engine, the oil pressure gauge returns to the same spot.

We recently had the car in the shop to fix leaking head cover gaskets. They also replaced a ball joint or two. I am thinking somewhere in all of this work, they disconnected the oil pressure sensor. Can you tell me where the sensor is located or the most likely places to look for the (hopefully) disconnected wire?

Thanks,
Jeff

Try a new gauge. If that doesn't fix it look at the wiring. If not they jacked something up.

I am leaning towards "they jacked something up" They had a lot of stuff disassembled under the front end of that car, and I am not thinking they failed to reconnect something or damaged a wire.

It may be a bad gauge, but right now I really doubt the gauge just happened to fail at the same time it went to the mechanic.

Knowing where to look for the oil sensor would be a good start so I could trace the wiring from that point.

Thanks,
Jeff

The pressure sensor is near the oil filter in the upper oil pan, the aluminum casting. It depends on if you have the DE or HR but they are in about the same location.
