Default Cam Chain Guide Wear?

Hi all,

I'm the last couple of days I've just noticed a whining or whirring sound coming from the front of the engine. It's tied to engine rpm, and is quite noticeable when the door is open and blip ping the throttle.

I've been searching flat out, and apart from a few waste of time threads, I've found one that mentions pulley bearings, belt tensioners, alternator problems, and the biggest as cam chain guides wearing away.

The motor has done 175,000kms, and has Tomei 272's in since roughly 100,000kms (possibly contributing to more load on the cam chain driveline).
It's due a service this weekend, so that's the first thing. Following that I'll get my stethoscope out to pinpoint it.

Any other ideas off the top of your heads? Lots of threads would show promise, people reporting the same noise on the same area, but there would be no result in the thread.

Could be anything that spins- alternator, idler pulley, ps pump most notorious. gl

Take the belts off and spin pulleys by hand. You will notice right away if one has a bearing problem before pulling the timing cover off

That will be my task for the weekend for sure, our days are getting very short here.

There's one thread I found that has a guy with the same problem, same place, etc. Trouble is like so many of these threads I've found, there's no conclusion to it, no fix.

This is his vid, it sounds just a bit quieter but the same type of noise

What would be a 5 minute job turned into a 3 hour one, thicker radiator meant I couldn't get any bars into the pulley tensioner drive, so fan shroud, intakes, heat shields and top rad pipe out, then i could get the belt off.

A quick start without the belt and all was normal sounding from the engine. The tensioner pulley is loose as a goose, spins super freely and rattles around a lot, so I'd say its him.

Nope, wasn't the tensioner bearing at all, or the one other idler that was sounding a bit poor.
Did the bearings just now and it's still whining away. So it must be PS pump or alternator, that's all that's on that side of the engine that's part of the belt drive.

Edit: It was the alternator all along, bearings had gone.
