Default How tight is too tight for your belts?

Getting belt squeal, want to tighten the belt. Kind of unsure if I can damage/put stress on the pulleys if it's too tight. I see some of you tighten your belt as "tight as you can."
Opinions?

I'm in the same boat as you, and I'm wondering the exact same thing.

If you get a high pitch belt squeal after messing with the serpentine belt, then yea you can tighten the belt to get rid of the squeal. There is a tension pulley just off center near the bottom of the car. Loosen the bolt on the pulley and then tighten the belt tension just enough where there is ~1/8" of flex if you put ~20lbs of force on the belt. The tech at my dealer liked to try and twist the belt and if it had enough slack to twist maybe 45 degrees, it was ok. Or if you can, just keep tightening the belt a bit at a time and start the engine until there is no squeal when the car is fairly cold.

The belt never has a squeal when its cold, but only squeals when it gets warm? I dont know what to say.

I tightened the lower belt. It was a little loose.

HOWEVER!!!!!!!!
The squeal is as loud as ever. I'm thinking this may be a pulley problem.
