Exclamation Grinding in third and other oddities-

Ok now. My Z only has like 7200miles on it and it's already acting up on me. I've had it in for service already and may have to take it back again! I just need to know if any of yours do the same thing?

I took it in for a strange rattle under the car. I thought it was a loose heat shield or something like that, and they tell me that it's normal. It's the TO Bearing and beefy clutches do that. ??!! Is this true?

Also, there is a quiet "thump" that resonates through the car right as I am putting it into first gear. It doesn't seem to do it everytime, but occasionally after the car has rolled a bit from the previous engage. Anyone experience this?

However, the new thing is that all the sudden, when I accelerate rapidly from a stop and finally shift into third, if I am over 40mph, there is a "grrrind", and then all upshifting is good from there. AND when I am and downshifting from fourth to third, again if I am over 40mph, there is a "grrrind-TINK"! -Keep in mind, I am shifting at 40-45mph and getting this noise. I dare not try it while going any faster.

So, I experimented tonight from a stop to accelerating s-l-o-w-l-y across the rpm band, shifting into second until I reached 42mph and then shifted into third, and no grind. -Slowing down from that, I slowed down nice and easy, let it coast in neutral until 40 and downshifted to third and "grrrind-TINK"!

So, I have about 1000 more miles left on the warranty and I need to know if I should be making plans to have the tranny looked at?

Is this part of some strange Nissan normal breakin thing? Or have I broke it in the broken way?

If you drive it really hard with those few miles on it, could that cause this? If so, then why only third gear?

Some people have had 3rd ger grinding problems and had the tranny replaced under warranty. I'd bring it into the dealer and start the process/request for a new tranny.

common.... lots of Z are doing this, there is a design flaw in a few of the parts of the clutch pdeal assembly.... if the dealer can duplicate the grinding, you may be able to get a new tranny and new clutch pedal assembly

I have the 3rd gear grind problem, and I also get "locked" out of second at high rpms. I've sorta gotten used to by giving the tranny just a bit more time before i shift, but it hurts my shift times. I told my dealer and they couldn't duplicate the problem (of course not, the tech who drove it off was slipping the clutch like I've never heard before). So they wont do anything for me. I wish I lived in Cali where some of these good dealerships are.

I ALWAYS drive my own car to replicate the problem. Mines seems to do it under extreme driving conditions in warmer weather...

Just got my Z... I have 480 miles on it and already I'm scared about third, I'm not even past the break in period (aka driving like a GRANDMA) and I had some grinding on third and it didn't want to go into gear.

[sigh] I'm having the samer intermittent problems. It's really embarassing.

I don't think mine is making a distinct grinding noise when going into 3rd. In cooler weather, I notice more problems getting in gear than warmer weather.

I get locked out of 2nd and 3rd sometimes when the revs are high. I do know that 2nd -> 3rd shift is a pain when driving hard.

When I first had this car, I kept getting locked out of 2nd gear. Once the revs went down I could go in fine, but it was both embarassing and slow at the track.

I hate shifting slow when driving hard, but it's a work around.

know what ive noticed.....whenever i shift hard....as in use a lot of force, it tends to grind more.

however i find that if i shift fast not using force its smooth as butter.

just curious - when your tranny grinds are you using a lot of force during the shifts?

It doesn't matter.. It does it however I shift :s

I usually jam it in there instead of wanting to hear "grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrti nk" . this way its more of a GRRDING! ouch huh?

I have been trying not to downshift into 3rd, just bypass it straight to second. And I also mostly go from 2nd to 4th, and that seems to do fine...

I just worry about the next time I actually want to get on it hard.

It's also embarrassing yes.. Looking all cool, people are checking ya out, and then the inevitable "Grind'em To Find'em" routine !

my car did that shiit today going into 3rd and i know its embarrising as hell... i'm going to try what you said about going into 3rd over 40 and see if it does it then, i've noticed it a few times while going hard on it and a couple just driving slow in the cold, maybe i need to get a new trans too, is this trans issue fixed for 2004 cars? i have started skipping third sometimes now in regular driving. new reason to go to the dealer yah

Oh damn. That's lame dude. How long were you without Z? -I have that show to go to on the first, so I think it would be wise to line it up for soon afterwards.

If this is a known issue with the transmission, then wouldn't they have corrected this in the '04 models?

Yes they should have, but they didnt. I have a 04'. Picked it up Jan 22nd of this year. Had my tranny replaced by Performance Nissan after 1300 miles. It was a 1 day job. No problem ever after...except the rattle of my Nismo flywheel/clutch that Jason made me put in.
