I'd run test pipes if it weren't for the fact that they don't pass smog and swapping them out, albiet an option, is not a simple procedure to do on jackstands in your garage.

If I had access to a lift, I'd only run test pipes.

i know what you mean... it isn't simple but I think it's worth it if you only have to do it once every other year.

Booger:

How much louder are the gutted cats now? I'm thinking of just biting the bullet and hollowing out mine now, before they fail. Ever since I saw the first post on this problem, I keep watching for (and sometimes imagining) a loss in performance, weird sounds or a drop in mileage. It's just not worth the worry, and I sure don't want a replacement set when it does happen!

***** - 2 reasons for me personally (in order of importance):

1. noise
2. emissions

While I could have test pipes in year round and swap to cats when inspection time came due, I cannot stand the sound test pipes alone emit - way too loud for me for everyday

To me they are not that much louder .A little deeper in tone...the rasp [tinny sound ] is still there between 2,500 and 3,500 rpms
