Default Oil Catch Can

Is a aftermarket oil catch can just for looks? Is it worth $90?

It's for looks if you don't go track racing.

you don't need to spend $90. I just got one for 20 on ebay. Its not a magical box or anything, just an oil trap.

Many cars product lots of excess oil blow by under hard use. The VQ engine is not really one of them, but for constant track use or for those going forced induction, a catch can is a good idea. Rather than having the oil particles collect in the intake, the catch can gives them someplace else to go, keeping your intake tract nice and clean.

The can can then be emptied at whatever intervals you feel you need to (we usually like to do it at each oil change). What you tend to find is a chocolate milk colored fluid, which is a mix of water and oil.

Adam:

Actually, the oil catch can does that whether you're racing or not. I was just wondering what King Tut was implying with the statement that its only real function was on the track.

I have seen a number of people post that they opened their plenum and or intake tub and it was coated with oil, apparently from the crankcase vapor recycle.

The oil catch can is probably a useful mod, but you don't need at shiny $90 one to do it.

Actually, the head of R&D at Stillen told me the VQ blows a lot of oil through the pcv system, but probably not the amount I am burning (1qt/1000miles or so). and that it would pass even more so on the track due to sloshing in the right head.

I'm buying a cheap one so I can see how much oil is actually blowing by.

good points - I guess I should have pointed out that blow by can definately be a relative thing, with various degrees being deemed "acceptable" by Nissan.

I know on my car ('04 with 18k, uses dino 5w30 GTX and facotry filter), I use aboslutely no oil (not measurable on the dip stick at least), and I am now going 6000 between oil changes

I was using a little before the supercharger, but never really monitored it. I'm guessing at the amount now, but with the oil change I did today, I will be watching it like a hawk and documenting. (not that I actually have any warranty at all, just want to figure out where its going and why).

I think I read somewhere on here that Nissan said 1qt/1000 miles was acceptable, but it could have been 3000. I don't remember

Can anyone post some pictures of where they connect to the engine and where they are mounted inside the engine bay?
