Default Will Viper tranny fit????

I am able to get a viper tranny for about 2000 and was wondering if it would fit our Z????? the only reason I would do this would be if my tranny craps out???? I assume you would only need to get a custom bell housing and maybe modify the drive shaft???? any ideas????

sounds like more trouble than good bro. you also have to worry about whether or not it'll fit where the oe tranny fits, which i bet it wont. you'd probably need a custom fabricated drive shaft, a custom clutch and flywheel, housing, harnesses, shift linkage, etc.

Well im installing the Tilton flywheel/ clucth combo this weekend so my warrenty might...might be void on my tranny......if a problem did arrise im just looking into option for a tranny that will hold a lot more HP and TQ than I have now..... If i ended up spending 2000 for a new tranny might as well get a better one right????? plus i know some people so i wouldnt spend any money on labor.....just cost of parts.... also im not that fond of the Z's tranny.... Specifically I dont like the shifting ( I have an earlier model Z)......kind of rough... Unless there is something that I can do to make the tranny smoother while shifting....and I know that the flywheel is going to make the car act diffrent but pulling from gear to gear still is not not going to be as smooth as I would like it.... Any ideas or comments????

Default shifter

The rougue shifter made mine shift much better (not really notchy) and much more precise than OEM.

Uh, if you were to use the Viper tranny, your tilton will be a waste of money. The transmission is probably too big to fit in the tunnel as well. Also, the Z has a lightweight driveshaft that you will lose by getting a new, different sized one made to adapt the Viper transmission. With this modification, your differential will be the thing to give out from all the HP and torque. And if that holds, it will be the half-shafts that break.

So in summary, this is a horrible idea. Leave the Viper transmission in the Viper, spend the $2,000 on a supercharger or turbos.

I dont see why itd be awesome. I never knew the viper tranny to be so great. Id be amazed if it even remotely fit, and Id expect 3 or 4k in modifying it to fit. I mean, at the most basic level, everything on the viper will be standard and the Z will be metric. no doubt it weighs more; and would increase drivetrain loss. unless your looking at a custom turbo of 500+hp, Im not sure why youd need a viper tranny.

sounds like you found a good deal and are trying to justify taking it. its just not a realistic or useful part for the Z.

There is no need for name calling. He was just asking a question, it's how people learn.

Viper Tranny would be a bad idea, I imagine it would be heavy and the ammount of fabrication required to make it fit would be a huge effort.

I think our transmission is made by ZF or Getrag; I know it's German at least. The Skyline GT-Rs use the Getrag 6-speeds (R34) so you should see how they beefed up their trans to hold their 1000+ horses

I'm pretty sure we have the Getrag. Cause thats what MKIV Supras use. My best friend has a Supra and are shift points are the same and the trannys look very simaliar. We've had his out many many many times (pyscho has 900hp, damn Supras) and i've seen mine up on the lift plenty of times. I could be totally wrong but I'm pretty sure the Getrag which is a very strong tranny. Oh and redline350ZZ is only asking a simple question and looking for help. Dont even post if your gonna waste space in this thread with your pathetic remarks. I have noticed theres a handful of people like Turbo-Maxima, and seriously thats why I dont post that much on here. Ruins the board for everyone else.
