oil pressure question
I think i had posted this in the wrong forum so i'll try here:
i just changed my oil yesterday. only 2500 miles on the car but i just wanted to change it...not using synthetic just yet and i used an original nissan filter for now. i had thought i over filled some (put in 5 quarts) so i drained out a little less than half a quart. at idle it looks like the oil pressure is a little past the second mark (30-40 i guess) after warmup but when i rev the engine it goes past 60 to the next mark (around 90-100) i'm guessing. i'm not sure if it will get up to 120. i'm going to test that later. i'm using mobil one 5-30 nonsynthetic. my question involves taking an accurate reading of oil using the dipstick. should i check the level of oil after the engine has been running for a bit? should the engine be on while i check it? should i let it cool down before i get an accurate reading? Also, could overtightening the oil filter cause a high pressure and what are the effects of overtightening? i'm just a careful person and i don't want to harm anything. i drove slowly to work which felt wrong in my Z.
thanks to all and i love this place!

just tested
i just drove for 10 - 15 minutes and it was idling at 30 psi and then at 3500 rpm it was at 90 psi. never really seemed to get above 90 - 100. is that considered normal after that amount of time? also, is there a technically adverse effect of overtightening the oil filter other than making it hard to get off?

Re: oil pressure question
I believe the manual says 5 quarts.
Before warm up my pressure is at around 60 (middle). After warm up it idles at around 30. When cold, I could get it to 120, but it's probably not a good idea to rev so high when your oil is still cold.
you should check the oil maybe 30-60 minutes after you stopped moving so the oil could gather in the pan again. WHen you check it right after you drive, it'll be lower since some of the oil is in the engine and not in the pan.

Engine warmup & oil PSI
Although engine temp needle hits normal operating temp level within some minutes, I notice oil PSI gauge rapidly hits 90 PSI over ~ 2000 RPM in any gear until driven for maybe 10-11 miles in morning suburban traffic which gets to a max of 55mph, after which I assume oil temp has reached its operating temperature.
I've been trying to keep it under 2.5K area to keep oil PSI under 90 for first 9.5 miles, which involves around 8 lights and a construction zone. @ mile 9.5 it opens up for some miles of highway, and with anxious road rage species putting pedals to metal, it's difficult not to start moving up to 3k, no matter where PSI is going.
So question is, should we be concerned about relatively 'cold' engine, even in 75-80F ambient, reaching 120PSI in first 10 miles?

didn't find rpm/pressure/temp/time/distance issue addressed elsewhere, but seemed like good place to amplify issue, rather than starting new topic. if you have no information about it, why just fill space with rhetoric? If you do have information about it, just supply it instead, and end it.
/thx.
