Default N54? M50? Inline 6 Swap

Hi all. Currently have a 05 Vortech v2 z33. The VQ just doesn’t do it for me. Thinking it’s time to drop the drivetrain for a new swap. It needs to pass NYS Inspection, as I do drive it as a street car. I’d like to stay away from LS, and it needs to make 450-600whp. I know of a m50 swap somewhere around Facebook, I’m mainly looking towards n54, but willing to consider other options. Anyone have any experience with some not so common engine swaps? Thanks!
ps, 450whp engine trans setup for sale this winter!

The good thing is that you have a DE which is going to have the most versatility as far as tuning and ECU availability goes.

I’m going to assume that you have (essentially) unlimited funds - you will need alot of cash to accomplish this.

You will need to find a way to control the engine solely with CAN communication. The Link G4x, the Haltech Nexus, or anything Motec will accomplish this. Factor in $8k to $10k for hardward, $2k for a custom harness, another $3k for configuration & install of everything electronic.

Dont sell your 6mt bc you will need it for the N54 engine - I’m sure someone somewhere will make a transmission bracket. Plan on $1k to $2k for this bracket.

the N54 will make 300-350hp but since youre dead set on 600hp plan on a $15k to $20k built block. Add $10k for new turbos/IC/etc. Add another $10k for cooling, exhaust, and everything else I’m missing as far as hardware goes. Add $10k for assembly & installation

And none of this will pass any inspection any emissions … so plan on keeping this a track car.

Back to reality … Assuming you want to keep this car than build the block (it’ll be $10k) and re-gear your blower to make 18-20psi of boost … $12k to $15k and you’ll have a mostly-reliable, street legal, 600hp car

100% better off going with what's suggested above. It's just not worth the trouble vs building what you already have.

Agree with the above, if you have a built engine already sell the supercharger and go turbo. I do question why you need more than 450whp though that's plenty unless you want to impress people on IG or like to highway race.

I think your a bit exaggerated here. It’s 2022, there is PLENTY more wild stuff than this out there. Although I do understand this is NOT a simple or easy process. I have plenty of recourses, will power and a decent bit of time to myself to do so. Is there a reason you would do a CD gearbox over a ZF? I would be buying a complete rolling chassis to help graft everything over to the Z chassis. I appreciate the .02, although I think you guys are neigh-sayers

It's not that we are "ney-sayers" it's being realistic. You have a built engine with 450hp already, throw a turbo on it and you can have the 600hp you want. What's the purpose of a half *** swap? Might as well get a different car, this is not a straight line speed car no matter what IG says (they are doing 4 gear pulls on drag slicks to even grip)
I have yet to see a swapped Z be faster than a VQ with the same power, but go ahead and prove us wrong!
The record Z running 10s had 420whp lol, it's about setup and driver more than power.

I have no actual care for doing anything note worthy. I have no interest in 1/4mile or any sort of competition in mind for the car. I’m not looking for practical, cheap, or easy. I’m just asking if anyone around here has done it or something similar. Like I said, I’m open to other ideas, but you guys just sound like couch potatoes lol. I bought the car stock at 14k miles. It’s 85k miles now, 450whp with quite a mod list. All done myself, I think it’s just time for something else? I have a ton of BMW resources, my daily is a 330Ci, and I’m pretty familiar around both Z and BMW.

How do you plan to pass NY inspection when it requires an OBD scan?

ball out

I was putting the question of not so common engine swaps in a z33. Never really proclaimed I was going to build some killer car.like I said this winter I may have my drivetrain for sale. I would love to update this post with a chosen swap candidate.I’m just looking still? This was more to gather information rather than proclaim me doing something.

I may be a little generic, really only needs to pass OBD inspection. Which is the purpose of me buying a donor car.

When you think about it it's really not that much except for whatever the donor engine/transmission costs. If he can do the fab work, mounts, then all you really need is a custom driveshaft

Jeez, the stickers gone, and yes it’s 06-08 lip on an 05 with drywall screws. It’s okay. It’s low, it’s hits the ground. Sorry my car isn’t your cup of tea ☕️.

That, software and wiring, getting CAN to communicate and figuring out a ECU. The physical mounting and what not is the easy stuff. It just takes time. A ZF gearbox would eliminate the use and expense of a custom clutch and flywheel setup.
