is your IS300 5spd?
I was considering buying one before I got the Z but couldn't for the life of me find a 5spd that was in good condition...i hear they only make 1,000 a year or so.

I had an 01' auto obviously....sold it about 9 months ago...and got a brand new 04' MT.
I love it.thanks a lot you guys for the great thread.
now i can see if this custom CF shift **** fits on the Z.
i couldn't tell you why you can't just unscrew it without doing the steps above...but i like to follow service manuals rather than trying to do something that might harm the car...the service manual steps will not harm anything.
plus this is really easy and now i can just unscrew my shiftknob whenever i want without all that locktite and i have a sexy **** that (i think) shifts easier and better than the stock shifter

ps. you don't have to cut anything on the car...
just something to protect the shift lever from the visegrips
i.e.- a rubber hose
i wouldn't suggest anyone cut their radiator hose ON their car
DISCLAIMER: i assume no liability on radiator hoses on the car and or messed up trannys...do at your own risk!! haha

jeez...i just attempted to get a nismo shift **** in, with the help of my roommates, and this seems to be impossible. i held the shift lever with a set of pliers, and they each took turns trying to twist the **** off with their hands. now they are both strong guys, and neither of them could even get the **** to budge. they twisted hard enough to screw up the leather on the **** and it still didn't move.
anyone have some advice on what i should try next?

well i wouldn't try too hard or you might damage something with a slip of the wrench or something...try instead of using hands to twist of the **** a new wrench with some rubber around the **** so you can get some leverage...
if it doesn't work tonight, try tomorrow...
