Default HID install question

Guys,

I am about to install aftermarket HID (H7 kit) for my base z. I saw a few threads where people took off their bumper to install the HID. Then other threads, people just remove the plastic part under the wheel well. I noticed with the installation through the wheel well, there isn't room on the passenger side.

Whats the best approach to install HID?

btw, how long is the install?

Tony

YMMV, but unless your wiring is all prepped as per OEM spec, I'd take out the headlamps to ensure that you're doing things right, i.e. mounting the ballast, snaking the wires in and ensuring that the cover is clamped down tight and proper, etc. You might have to drill into the cover to get the wiring through also. Although it would take a bit more time, I think that the job will be easier with the headlamp out of the car.

If you had an OEM HID set already in your car, then going through the wheel well would easily be recommended for bulb changes (for it's sheer simplicity). If you want to shortcut it, try the wheel well method. If you find that it doesn't work well for you, you know what to do next Good luck!

Best approach is to remove the bumper. It should take you about 10 minutes max. Doesn't sound like to much time if you want to get something done right.

June,

Do you have to remove the wheels? Also, how big is the oem ballast? Just trying to compare with the aftermarket ballast to see if it fits in that location

To do what he described, no (I learned how to do the install from Jun). What aftermarket kit do you have?

Tonye:

No need to remove the wheel. Just turn the wheel one way to access the bolts on one side, and repeat on the other side.
Aftermarket ballast won't fit in the OEM location because of 1) shape and 2) size.
