I used to work for an aftermarket company that sold a universal targa kit. You just cut the top, add the seals and it worked ok, except the rigidity is shot. Kit was just a few hundred and it would look great on a show car but you could never drive spiritedly again because the shell would twist. Not a good idea, the car just was not made for it.

If you are willing to pay top dollars it can be done and probably turn out better than a stock coupe. Theres plenty of company who will do the work if the money is there. I know of a company in La Jolla, CA that will build or mod cars to your spec.

Anyone that wants a targa top on their Z should go ride in an old 280Z with a targa top... in the rain. Then ask the owner of the 280Z how much the rubber gaskets are that could fix that leak.
Now think about how much it will be to have custom gaskets made in 10-15 years.

I'm not sure how stong the body of the Z is, and where the major bracing components are located, but I dont see why it isnt possible. My Camaro doesnt have t-tops, but there are quite a few people who have converted their cars to have them. Granted these cars were built from the start to support this idea. I dont think you would need to go as far as adding a roll cage. Many people with people with t-tops or convertibles beef up their sub-frame connectors to help regain some lost rigidity. I would think that would help in the case with the 350z. I havent really heard much about people purchasing sfc's, but its worth a shot.

I thought we were talking Targa not T-bar roof. As far as a roll cage "making up for it" it depends on the structure of the car. BTW I used to own nothing but Camaros and if you got on them with the tops off pretty soon the tops would not fit as well. Because the chassis twists due to lack of support and that car was made for it. Just a word of caution.
If my car was a trailered show car I would do, but not drive it hard at all.
