New GE plastic. Never paint or scratch your car!
I don't kow how far this technology is, but I just saw a GE ad while watching football. Their pitch,"Imagine a world where cars never needed to be painted again. And cars that were scratch proof."
Check it out for yourself. http://event.warnerbros.com/main.html#lexan-4
It's some new process of making plastic. I would think car manufacturers would love this feature. They could reduce their production costs by eliminating the raw materials/equipment needed to paint the car on the assembly line.
And even though its vague, i think they are also implying that this new plastic can replace metal! So weight savings as well.

does saturn use some form of this? cause they have the dentproof doors and I think scratch proof too.
Id imagine the materials cost more, and alot of machinery would get thrown away. and personally, maybe its stupid, but I wouldnt want my car to be plastic.... even if it is a great versitile material, it just seems cheap.(tho when I saw the commercial for some reason I thought it covered the metal. it stated it was lexan tho, so maybe it does replace the metal.)

it's a colored mylar film usually vacuum molded to the plastic part DURING the injection molding process. GE plastics has been working on the technology for several years. The bonus is its durability vs. paint, and also the overall cost involved of obtaining the final finish on a car.
The downside could be replacement costs, although the jury is still out on that. I can tell you it will make "paint chipping" a thing of the past...for the most part.

well I guess youd need a scratch to warrent raplacment, since if its died through, it couldnt chip. but youd have to replace the whole panel. but to mold panels in plastic shouldnt be very expensive at all. and half the cost is then painting the panel, which you wouldnt have to do.
