Default Need input: Painting Urethane parts

Hi guys, need your imputs/knowledge. I tried searching this section of forum for tips and notes for getting urethane bumpers painted by a shop. I wasn't able to find any here or on google so hoping you experts would chime in.

My basic understanding is that a urethane bumper has to be primed with a primer to be painted. This primer makes the surface of urethane more sticky for the paint.

Is this right? How long does the primer have to stay on? Does it get cleaned off? Do you need some time before Primer goes on and Paint goes on? Can shops do all of this in a day or two? Anything else I should be aware of or *red flags* if shops don't know what they're doing?

Thanks in advance.

What you just said its true of primers purpose in general. u can paint urethane parts however you want, you can scuff and shoot, or you can scuff, primer, shoot.. It just depends on how good a paintjob you want, i suggest you get them to primer it. Theyll most likely do a 2 stage paintjob which involves a base coat and a clear coat. some people mix the clear with the b.c but i doubt a reputable shop would use 1 stage but u never know...

urethane needs to be lightly sanded and primed first. otherwise the surface is too glossy and the paint will chip very easily. there are dry times between coats but they are minimul, in other words from primer to clear it can easily be done in a day. you may want to entertain the idea of having them put in a flex agent into the clear. if they only put on 2 coats of clear it will still be pretty flexable, but more than that and the clear becomes brittle and will crack. only thing is, sometimes the flex agent will have a little different gloss to it. good luck.
