Question painted engine covers

i was wondering how challenging it is to paint the plastic engine cover. in all honesty, i've never really worked on my own car, i'd like to start some where. i'd basically just like to havr the engine cover match the car (redline, fyi), but i do want it to be fairly glossy (like the car) and look clean and professional. so what i'd like to know is ...
1) is this a projct i can sucessfully do myself?
2)what materials and equipment is involved?
3) how exactly do you do it to get the best results?

thanks in advance,
james

and while i'm thinking about it, ditto for the brake calipers
