I have PIAA LEDs as my tag lights. They are the ones w/ 1 blue LED and 1 white LED, so they give off a bluish-white light.
Just wondering if anyone knows the laws regarding this in Alabama...here's what happened...
I'm headed to my girlfriend's apartment when I notice a cop behind me. I haven't done anything, my tag has been renewed, so I'm thinking I'm good to go, no reason to pull me over. Wrong...here's a summary of our convo:
Cop: "Can you get rid of those blue lights?" (Referring to the tag lights)
Me: "No ma'am, not at the moment."
Cop: "Only police officers are allowed to have blue lights. And you've got some sort of lights up front, too, don't you?" (Referring to my LED reflectors that light up white/amber)
Me: "What's wrong with those?"
Cop: "Nothing, but only police officers are allowed to have blue lights. That's a $150 ticket, but I'm going to let you go."
Me: "Ok, thanks."
So, I got off with nothing. But it kinda ticked me off. I've had numerous cops behind me that don't care, but I guess she didn't have anything better to do. I really don't want to take them out. What would you all do? Anyone know the laws regarding this?
I had to vent, thanks for reading and any advice.

most states have laws on the color, location, and number of lights on a vehicle... This is due to the distraction that it can cause to other drivers.
Ex. Underglow neons are illegal in many states, forward facing marker lights must be amber, rear facing marker lamps must be red, In texas it is illegal to have more than 4 headlamps/fog lights turned on while on public roads...

Yes, anything except white, red, or amber is always illegal. I do not believe any state allows other colors on vehicles apart from those three. That is why HID lookalike bulbs say "off-road use only" on the package...even that little amount of blue hue is illegal...so imagine how miffed they would get seeing pure blue bulbs.
You've been pushing your luck until now and it would continue unless blue LEDs are removed. It's just the fact, unfortunately.

apparently, it is illegal to have red turn signals if the original color was amber in the rear, from what the highway patrol that stopped me told me.
But he didn't give me a ticket, he just gave me a warning.
I guess since my tag was expired (i had the sticker in the glove box, just forgot to paste it) he had to look for something else to pick on.

yeah cops can be real annoying, throughout my entire driving record, only reasons to this day that cops have pulled me over are due to lighting or front bumper license plate missing etc.. (hope i didn't jinx myself there)

i got nailed once with my VW, real ******* state trooper in PA, saying i couldnt have any lighting on my mirrors (had LEDs molded in my GTI mirrors, which were red) he told me it was decorative lighting and wrote me a ticket for it, but i took it to court, along with the PA Vehicle code(not sure which section it was right now) and showed the moron the actual law stating that the lights were indeed legal and he was in the wrong. The judge dismissed the case and the same trooper has tried to have me arrested 3 times since then, for stupid things like trespassing at my friends house, that went real well in court also...
^What a douchebag cop. Yeah I've been pulled over countless times cause I have a blue LED lighting my license plate. Only been written a ticket for it once though. In Nevada the only legal colors are white and orange/amber. No red. Same with Florida.
Cops seem to really get upset when someone other than them have a pretty blue color on their vehicle. I asked an officer why THEY don't get to have the ugly colors on THEIR cars like vomit orange. . . . .his answer. . . "BECAUSE".

I can say the blue is illegal in all 50 states; ok, not positive about rural states like south dakota or something... but probably.
and actually the white sidemarkers are illegal as well. required by law to have an amber side reflector in front and red side reflector in rear. you'll find them on all cars. the LEDs are not specificly a problem. as long as their white or amber.
