Why are the sides of the front grille slats blocked ?

I installed the front gille yesterday. Had to put the car up on ramps, took off the plastic cover under the radiator, the covers on the two sides of the grille opening, and then could install the grille with the zipties. Btw, it looks pretty cool.
Here is my question :
Why are the two sides of the grille opening covered? These are plastic covers which attaches to the bumper with 3 snapins each. I left those off. Are they covering something, from road debris or water ? If it's a water shield, it doesn't make sense to put it in bottom front of the radiator. If it's debris, the diamond mesh will protect it.
Or...is it something like an air dam, which diverts the air flow from the sides onto the radiator and the intake ?????
Do the aftermarket bumpers have these covering ?
I checked the service manual but couldn't figure out what that cylindrical thing is to the left of the radiator.

****, please post a picture of the grille, I'm sure it looks great.
The air opening has been discussed in the past, and the only conclusion was that with the sides blocked you still have an area of about 7" high and 30" wide for air flow which probably is engineered to give optimum airflow to control temperatures.
Have you noticed a difference in engine temperature without the blockage?

So should I, or shouldn't I put those plastic pieces back on ?
I will keep an eye on the engine temp when I drive around today, but what I'm more worried about is water or any other kind of damage.

its not the bumper blocking those off, its 2 plastic pieces behind the bumper. the RH side protects the PS pump lines, and the LH side is there to make it look uniform.

I knew there was some kind of line behind one of them I just didn't remember what it was for. Obviously I had no idea what I was talking about. I just remember looking at them going WTF? one of my covers snapped when I hit the fox otherwise I probably wouldn't have paid much attention.
