Default 06 "Card holder" to Cup holder conversion..

So I have the cupholder that goes into the Right Hand lower knee panel. I have removed the "Card holder" that the 06 comes with (dumb idea). But now I need to remove the bracket that held in the card holder.

Does the Cup Holder have its own bracket too? The Service Manual didn't show this step.

Thx in advance!

Bump...

Anyone? Seems like a quick mod and I'd like to get it done. Or determine that it can't be done. Any suggestions?

Thx

This is a good idea, if it can be done.

Because I find the card holder quite useless.

After the conversion, there will be 5 cup holders. That's almost as much as a minivan.

Sweet.

I'll definitely update everyone as I work through this. May call the dealer today between meetings to see if they know what the steps are which are not shown in the service manual pages.

I know in order to remove the card holder, you'll need a looong screwdriver, there's a little tab you have to press down on at the very back of the tray when it's in the full open position. I didn't do it myself, but Tadashi at Technosquare had to remove this from my dash in order to get access to my ECU. It looked like a pain to do but he got it out eventually. Might have to jiggle it around too.

I have the card holder removed. That was easy..as you said just a tab and it slides out.

But what it slides out of is some sort of mounting bracket. This bracket is in the way of where the cup-holder needs to be. I need to figure out what is required, or if it is possible to remove this bracket before I begin removing the knee panel, etc.

Ya and no.. I need to remove the passenger kick panel, and then supposedly the magic screws to remove the bracket will be revealed. Once the bracket is removed then the cup holder piece should slide and clip into the remaining slot. Theoretically.

Getting a brake squeal problem fixed now. Then I'll tackle that. :-)

Thx

I didn't know that was a card holder. I thought it was a coin holder. I put all my change in there, and it works great for me...

Not yet. Been lazy and/or occupied with other stuff. I've got two other projects boiling for the car, and that damn day-job BS keeps slowing my roll. Probably by next week I'll have it done.

I really bet it's just as simple as removing that panel, removing the bracket, then installing the cupholder, and then replacing the knee panel. Hope see anyways!

Didn't work. Apparently it isn't as direct a swap as Courtesy suggested.

Hey Smoky, how did you remove it? I been trying for hours now and nothing. I cant see any tab in the back of the card holder that I can press. Was this how you did it?

Whew..it's been a while...the Z was a couple cars ago...

If I recall correctly there is a tab way in the back, near the top. It's not something you can easily see, even with a flashlight in there. But a flashlight helps.

Imagine a tab in the middle that needs to be released downward. It is flush with the top of the card holder. Like this ---- --- ---- Where the middle piece is the tab. It's hard to describe. It's tough to get that sucker outta there though. And once it's out be careful not to let any of the pieces fall out or it becomes difficult to get it back in and still retract, etc.

Sorry I cant be of more help. I've since sold the Z and the new owner totalled it.

Yup that was it, I needed an extra long flat head to reach all the way back there and a flash light. Thanks smoky!

Hope this helps someone else.
