Steering wheel Auto shifter!
Well, correct me if I am wrong, but the tiptronic gear shifting does not involve any mechanical inputs, electic only, no?
One can splice into those wires and put 2 buttons for thumbs on each side of the stock steering wheel, how expensive would that be?

I'll be glad to work on this, without paddles. Cuz one of our manufacture had this type of kit for other cars. They should all work the same. Most important is that black box, which provents you shift up and down at same time.

I've driven an AMG SLK32 with a supposed faster shifting tiptronic type shifter. At the end of the day its still an auto and hangs on the rev when you want to shift. If you want fast shifts, manual is still the way to go.
Im not going to start the AT vs 6sp fight but go do some homework first

Bah who gives a damn about .01 seconds of time lost for a AT vs Mt or the other minor perks. Apples and oranges. There are more than a few days that I wish I had got my 2nd Z in AT not MT. The bad boy image of driving a MT and that making you a "man" is about as stupid as 80 year old men driving their Corvette C6's while never breaking 30mph even on the highway. Let each person do as they please and in the words of Arnold "stop whining"

I looked in to doing to steering colum shifters about a year ago with a custom kit from some folks that do BMW retrofits. The cost was going to be about $700.00. I opted to do the MOMO Automatico **** Instead and have been happy as crap.
Sorry I didn't mean to come across negative against the AT, I suspect many of the folks interested in this thread have one. I would be interested in reading any of your homework to show an AT can shift faster than a manual though (or point me in the right direction

lol because a human cant react the same speed as a true race car auto trans... the time it takes to kick the clutch slow you down big time... and I'm not talking about the stock Z trans
I'm saying there is WAY more then enough proof that racing auto trans is MUCH faster then any human on the planet...

OK now I know where the confusion is.
I meant an AT transmission (such as the one in the Z), not a clutchless manual (sequential manual gearbox) which is used in race cars. Big differencce between the two.

oh lol... got ya... I think that was the confusion!
The Z trans isnt to bad once you get the VB done to it... mine shifts VERY quickly... faster then what I could do with a manual! and im pretty mean to my manual clutch kicks

Ill be honest to you stock for stock tranny the manual is faster but now upgrade both trannies and you'll see what im talking about at low power levels we can shift the manual but once you start passing 650 to 700 rwhp it starts to become difficult. And every shift is not always the same. You also have the factor of missing a gear. And the reaction wont be them same.
I like the manual because you r always in control and its really fun but when you talk about serious horsepower IMO nothing beets an AT.
Im just dying for some one to upgrade the Z AT tranny to handle 800 rwhp plus.
Also one little thing look at the manuals gearing and look at the AT gearing the manual is more aggressive due to its 6 gears we AT have longer gears to accomplish almost the same top speed as the manual. So with longer gears and low power like our cars have its makes it harder to go through the gears compared to the manuals which are shorter.
