Has anyone went Targa? (for real)
I wonder if enough of us committed to doing it...if we could get a shop to research how to properly do it, maybe on a wrecked Z. Then we could all have it done...PROPERLY...at, hopefully, lower than $8k. I'd be willing to throw a deposit down on it though....that looks awesome...

I've contacted a local custom shop today. They said that they have done T-Top Conversions on lots of cars...and that it usually ran $1k to $1200. Even if it costs $2k, it'd be worth it to me to have the targa! I think i'm gonna take my car into them over the next few weeks and have them look into whether it's possible...and if it is, what the cost involved would be. How many of you would really be interested in this?!
haha....i agree...that's why I'm having them see if they can do the TARGA!!! I definitely do not want T-Tops...but it is comforting to know that they have experience in chopping up roofs...and putting them back together of course...
Thats the only good one he took.
I can't imagine it being that cheap. The R&D alone on a car they've probably never done. Its so much more than just chopping off a part of the roof panel. EXtra bracing needs to be placed, plus you need to store the top somewhere, worry about sealing when the top is on...

between when i posted that originally, and now...i've done ALOT of research on this...working hand in hand w/ the local Nissan dealership. There will be extra bracing done to my Z when I do it...but it's not as much work as you might think. I am, however, switching shops that will do it. I found another local shop that does lots of chop-tops for hot rods etc. He does some quality work...and was the first guy who took the time to sit down with me and explain what all he thought needed to be done and let me explain what all I had found out. Basically, I'm moving ahead with the project once I get my front bumper in. Good to see that it can be done...but sucks to see I got beat to it!
Anyways...It would be good to see some more pics of that car!

To add to the topic; there's a reason why the roadster weighs 250 lbs more than the coupe. In order to keep the roadster's rigidity close to the coupe (I've driven both and really can't tell the difference) nissan added extra crossbars and added reinforcement around the door frames and in the floor pan. So if you wanted to targa your Z and keep the rigidity expect to weigh 100+ lbs more.

Yeah, there's definitely gonna be added weight. Multiple frame stiffening adjustments...PLUS, i'm gonna incorporate a rollbar into the inside...just in case I ever decide to drive on my roof
I used to targa mini trucks with a kit that was sold back in the day. Now a mini has a frame so we never had to worry about that part, but if you could find the targa kit then you would have all the peices minus the frame components to do it.
As for making the frame stiffer well have a look I know its not a Z but this is something I made.
