Default What do you do about rock chips?

Man its only been a week and the rock chip count is pilling on, and a few of them are on the winshield. I dont have a really bad one yet (knock on wood). So I just wanted to know do you guys take action to prevent them? or after 6 months to a year you just get it detailed. I also heard that clear bras are not that great for the paint but im not to sure about it. Anyone have any crazy rock chip stories?

Dont tailgate. Avoid highways during the winter time when there is salt on the road.

I have at least 10000 chips on the front end and 100 or so micro chips on the windshield. I just passed 10000 miles so about 1 chip for every mile i guess. Makes me sick when I wash it the paint is so rough.

Just installed clear bra. Hood (including bulde ), fender, bumper, lights, rearview mirror: 550. Why would you NOT put on a bra?!

+1

I'm just planning on getting a Nismo V1 bumper, have it painted and have the body shop hold on to it until its ready to have a clear bra put on it. No point putting one on now since my bumper looks like **** anyway. Damn i wish i knew this before hand when i bought the car. That would have been the first thing i did.

Repaint everything, let it cure for 60 days without driving it, have the clear bra put on.

This should keep the front end looking good.

The windshield is another matter and all you can do is replace it every few years.

Good Luck!!

+1 on the touch up paint. It'll set you back $20 for pearled paints.

The easiest solution is to park your car next to mine. It'll seem like YOUR rock chips magically disappear in comparison

Around town I don't use one. If I know I'm getting on the freeway. It's the $99 Colgan Bra for me. Takes less than 30 secs to install. Great for parallel parking too. Car has been bumped about 4 times and no damage. Nice to have the extra protection when parking in San Francisco.

I have used this on my last 2 cars great stuff. Will not chip . A much tougher product than the 3m film . I had that CRAP installed on my ZR when i bought it. Had it removed in 1 month and this stuff sprayed on . It's the best if you are going to keep the car. Where I live they use sand not salt on roads and your car will be sandblasted in less than a yr if you don't do something about it.

do what i do....let someone else drive your car for a few and tell them to pull in head first into a spot....unsuspecting person + parking block = free fresh paint....kidding kidding

I just repaint it ever so often....$150 for a fresh paint is cheaper and looks better IMO than a BRA

Yea people, contrary to popular belief, the vinyl, and leather bras still protect better on highway/freeway long distance driving. A clear bra just will not protect against the pebble sized debris, but the ugly black bras will........... I am all for clear bras, but what happens when they get split open by a real rock. *EDIT* I live in TN so driving on the interstate is usually a 80Mph experience for 30+ miles or so.

The only tactic that truly works is keep the car at home, rocks get thrown from a lane or two away, they bounce for quite a ways, and every time I hear "thwack!" I am glad I have a clear bra.

I've had my clear bra since the day after they delivered my car.
I drive through a perpetual construction zone called 87, it may actually be a gravel surface by now, it is tough to say but I have been hit so many times I am shocked I don't have damage.

I always leave three seconds or more between myself and those in front of me and I am on my third windshield. I have a ding in one of my Nismo tips and the forward facing part of the back box looks like it has been bead blasted. I still have no breaks, tears or rips in the clear bra. It is not as shiny as the rest of the paint but it is better than hundreds of black dots all over the front.

By the way,

For Sale Nissan black bra, was delivered on the car, has not been on since. $50.00 +shipping (free delivery to the NorCal GTG on Fridays)

I just painted my bumper every year, the bra is ok but imo doesn't look so good. I was always afraid of the 3m stuff turning yellow during the summer from the heat. I also avoided getting stuck behind any trucks.
