What year is the Z? I don't have this problem in mine but in my wife's 03 accord(and does have a cabin filter) I found out that it was because the A/C needed a recharge and I was smelling the new freon(whatever it's called) running low. I had the same issue in my 99 expedition also but it was because I had some kind of coolant line problem?? I would smell it on normal but not on max so they bypassed it(or pay $600 to fix)? Don't know the specifics would have to read the repair receipt. Just trying to give some ideas.

My vehicle has the same issue, I thought it was just me since none of my passengers have ever mentioned it, but I guess they were just being polite. I was going to spray some lysol disinfectant into the outside vents while running the unit to kill any bacteria/mold/fungus, but I think it sucks that so many of us are having this issue.

I used lysol spray to fix the odor/mold problem. Make sure the area well ventilated. start the engine, hand brake on, roll down all windows, set AC on high (recirc off), then 3 second bursts of lysol into the AC intake. Odor hasn't come back in 2 years

The HVAC fresh air intake is the vent that has a grill by the windshield wipers and hood. I read elsewhere to use Lysol also. I'll give it shot this weekend.
