Default Whats the best way to remove fish scale texture?

My Z is now a weekend car, and I can start looking at the longer duration projects I just wasn't able to do when the car was a DD.

I have never liked the fish scale texturing on the center stack and the doors. Looking at them, it doesn't seem like it would be too hard to sand out the texture, and then repaint the panels what ever color I wanted.

For anyone that has done this, should I just sand down the texture, or should I put some filler on the panels first, then smooth them out?

Anyone done this? Advice?

Thanks.

contact B-Unit. I bought the piece between the seats from him that he had sanded and painted black.

Also Acree did his center console. (I got that also)

Sand down the texturized stuff till it's smooth, prime it, and paint it, but definitely don't just putty over the whole thing right away, it'll look like shiat.

you also need an adhesion promoter or the paint will just peel off

If done right you won't have to use any glaze.

Thanks guys, I was pretty sure nothing else but sanding was needed, but its always good to ask someone who has done it before.

John, you really think an adhesion promoter is needed? Once its sanded down, there shouldn't be any thing but raw plastic exposed, so a good primer should be all that is needed. Is this just a fail safe thing, or do you know something more about the this process?

Sand with 180, clean off, spray Bulldog adhesion promotor, wait 5 minutes and spray high build primer, let cure up for 4 hours or so, sand with 220, clean off, another coat of primer, cure, sand with 400, then base and clear.

You need to spray the adhesion promotor, unless you want it to flake off.

Sorry I forgot to mention that. I like BullDog, lots of experience with it and I've never had it fail. Although you may not *need* to use the promoter, it never hurts to, especially on a project like this where the piece is going to be getting alot of abuse.

I don't think 2 coat of high-build are necessary on something like this. As long as he sands the base smooth and gets one good coat of primer on he should be able to paint right away, but to each his own.

It will save him time. He could get by with one coat, but he'd have to sand with 220 or finer and it would take forever to get the texture off. With anything more course he'd have to have two coats to cover any sanding marks.

Great stuff guys! Thanks, exactly what I am looking for.

Anyone know how hard it is to get the dash off? The center is easy, as are the door panels, but the ends of the dash have the fish scale as well, and it looks like everything is sitting on top of it. Will I have to remove everything to get it off?

Has anyone posted a DIY for removing that part?
