Question Is the Airbag Cutoff Switch Available Yet?

Does anyone know if the airbag cutoff switch is out yet? If so, how much? If not, why?

Default I used these guys

Todd,

Go here. They are not to far from you. They even come to your house to do it. It will be around $350 or so depending on how far they have to drive. Did a real nice job. Only took a couple days after I called to get it put in.

I got the Nissan one for a healthy price of $500+
dollars for the harness and the switch WITHOUT
installation!!! Before I got it I had to fill out a form
with DOT requesting permission.

Once I got it, the dealer would not install it
for some stupid reason (I no longer go to that
dealer), but at least they let me have the kit.

The kit unfortunately comes with a very ugly indicator
light which is supposed to mount prominently in the
center of the map lights with an ugly wire hanging out
the back of it. I was not going to do this. I also
didn't want to pay the 4+ hours of labor to put it in
due to all the parts that had to be removed.

After talking with another dealer, we worked out a
compromise. I would take the car apart and run
the wires. They would make the final connections and
test the unit and sign the papers. I would then put
the car back together. They charged me a 0.5 hour
labor. I could live with that.

In order to get around the ugly indicator, I drilled a small
hole in the dash below the cup holder and made a bracket
that fits behind the dash to hold the indicator. The only
thing showing is a small hole for the light to shine through.
You barely notice the hole is there, but you can still tell when
the system is deactivated. The turn off switch mounts in one of the small package shelves between the rear speakers.

Hope all of this helps. I know my 6 year old son likes it!! ;-)

That sounds rather strange. Can you post some pics of what all this looks like?

I thought that the switcvh was an option on the touring, that is what the switch blank is for next to the heated seats. Well thats what I thought anyway. So, if this is the case the wires should already be in the harness and all you need to do is order the switch from nissan, connect the switch and get it inspected at the dealership.

OK, I'll see if I can clear some of this up. I tried to find the
Nissan directions so I could scan them, but I was unable to
find them. I took two pictures to show the switch box
and the indicator light location that I choose.

Basically, if you wire it like Nissan wants, the harness first plugs
into a location near the main fuse block in the drivers foot
well. From there it is supposed to go up the window pillar
and across to the map light in the roof. That is where the
ugly indicator box is mounted. From there the harness
continues across the roof to the other pilar, down to the
passenger foot well, jogs over to the passenger airbag, back
along the floor and up to the back of the drivers side small
package shelf where the switch is mounted. You could also
put it in the passenger side if you had the Nav in the drivers
side.

It requires taking apart just about EVERY interior piece of trim in
the car to install, hence the large amount of shop time.

I choose to go from the fuse block straight across the dash
and mount the indicator under the cup holder. It is hidden
completely out of sight except for a small hole for the light
to shine through. The switch and everything else when in
the suggested locations.

You can see the small circle under the cup holder which is the
indicator light. The picture is taken sideways. The top of the
dash is towards the left.

Hopefully the pictures will help...

Here is the second picture. Sorry I couldn't show you the
ugly box in all its glory, but I'm not taking the dash apart
again! Just think of a black box 1"x1.25"x1.75" with a
plug out the back and a hole drilled through the center of
your map light cover which is visible from any seat. My way
is MUCH LESS noticable!!!

Good lord! I am shocked you have to take up space in one of the package shelves (I have the NAVI so this would make the other one useless too...) for this switch! Why the hell couldn't Nissan have a place in the dash for this lock?? I wanted this so I could haul my niece and nephew around once in awhile, but this is ridiculous...

Thanks for the pics though, mgaza!

See my detailed description of Sensible Solutions' (airbagonoff.com) installation of two switches in my car here. I chose to have them installed in my (empty) nav compartment, but you could place them almost anywhere else.

My only regret is the switches cannot be flush mounted, so I couldn't go with my original plan of placing them in the center console where the seat heater switches are mounted in the touring model.

Otherwise I am very happy with the hardware and the installation.

If you think the on/off switch was big, you should see the
indicator light box!!! You would quickly understand why its
behind the dash with just a little hole. The size of the
switch commasence got installed was a little more in
line with what I was expecting.

I think Nissan could have done a better job and cut the cost
in half, but at least it
works and the simple plug into the factory harness was
clean and simple. I could have done the whole job myself,
but the DOT paperwork made it sound like it wouldn't be
legal. Not quite sure why...
