Default I need a bit more info before I black out my 06 lights

I was researching the DIY and was wondering if sanding or if even primer is required before painting the headlights? What kind if paint do you recommend for this job? I wanted to go for a gloss black btw. Also if you have any tips to make the job easier let me know, thanks!

I primed mine with a couple of coats before putting the paint on. I used plastic paint. Didn't go with gloss.

My best advice is to start early in the day like the DIY says. Be sure to let the paint cure as much as possible before putting the pieces back together. Don't be afraid to use a lot of silicone to make sure you seal those headlights up tight- you don't want a leak no matter what or you'll be taking the headlights back out to dry out the ballast and find your leak.

Good luck.

I didn't sand my headlights. I don't think it's really necessary to do that.

I did prime mine. I used a plastic friendly primer, the same manufacturer as the paint I selected for my headlights.

Some tips-
DO....
take your time in spraying your headlights,
understand that it might take several LIGHT coats,
allow ample time to dry between coats,
start early (this is not a quick project),
have a friend there to help and pass time,
make sure you have a putty knife (or a cheap/old butter knife) to help collect the head light silicone/sealer when you pry them apart to NOT get them on your headlights (when you separate the headlight, it's literally like taking a piece of EXTRA cheese pizza from the pan...)

Also....I know it's personal taste, but I'd consider going to a flat or satin black. I was going to go with a gloss but changed my mind. I have flat and it looks incredible (I have ppl complement them ALL the time).

GOOD LUCK!
