Default >>>>Custom engine painting<<<<

Wright guys a while back Radaudiodesigns posted up his idea for a cool custom engine cover design!

Inspired by the skylines and FTO engine covers he came up with the idea of the Japanese flag.

I realy liked the idea when he had done it but never realy thought much of it...

Untill yesterday when the urge came upon me to give it ago!

Off i went down to out local paint supplyer and picked up:

Plastic primer
360 primer
gloss white
rosso red
clear coat

Ryan used to be a pro painter so i new i would not be able to replicate his amazing results but what the hell.

I PM'ed Ryan asking him if he did not mind me using his design and if he could give me any pointers on how to go about it.

Me being me i could not wait and started before Ryan had chance to answer my PM! haha.

step 1.
Remove engine cover and clean.

step 2.
Sand engine cover with 600 grit and then down to 1200 grit to remove grease and any plastic lumps.

step 3.
2 coats of plastic primer.

step 4.
3 coats of 360 base primer.

step 5.
Once primer is dry sand whith 1200 grit to smooth it.

step 6.
Clean off dust with clean cloth.

step 7.
gloss white coat. (i did about 5-6 coats just to use up the paint i had payed for!! lol)

step 8.
Once gloss white is dry lay design over top. and mast out all areas that need to stay white.

step 9.
Spray gloss red over the top. (again i did about 6 coats just to use up the paint).

step 10.
Leave it all over night to completely dry. (i had a small heater in the garage with me as paint need to be done at around 20 oC not at bloody cold outside temp! lol)

step 11.
Slowly remove masked off areas.

step 12.
Gloss coats again i did loads for the hell of it! ha.

step 13.
Once dry refit engine cover and feel good about youself!

Before:

After:

In total this cost me £25 and a few hours of my time, It come out good but i had some small bleeding of the red into the white where the making had shrunk.

I may get a different one later on but for nw i think it looks cool!

Thanks to Ryan for the idea mate!

What do you guys think ??

Thanks Tim.

I thought you were painting the engine... I was interested for a moment. Anyways, that's cool too, I guess. I'm just going to get custom badges for my engine cover that say "Twin Turbo" and be done with it.

nice job. would look more original though if you repainted the "V6" and "3.5" silver again though.

+1 the paint looks great on the cover and I personally don't think it's rice however I prefer painting to match the car. The thing this thread helps me is how to prepar for paint which I myself had a shop do for me. I would have rather painted it myself but did not know how or what materials to use.
