Film on windshield behind rearview mirror?

I know that dotted film serves a purpose, is it to repel sunlight? I remember reading about it before, but I forgot. Sorry for a stupid thread, I'm just writing a piece on GT5 and trying to make a point.

It helps to block out the sun for the small area the visors don't cover.

getto factory window tint and I think it's actually paint not film.
