if the hatch struts are worn and/or too stiff, they will not move the hatch far enough to get over the catch. In other words, it SHOULD pop up just enough on the first push to clear this.. if it doesn't.. you have to push it again in order to get it open.

Yeah they're probably worn if you have an 03. In my particular case (07) I replaced the stockers with stainless steel (and much stiffer). In fact they're so stiff that I get the same issue you guys do.

You might try the penny trick.
There are two rubber bumpers that are about 1-1/2" long on the lid.
Twist them to remove.
Pull the spring out and drop a penny (I used nickels. Made me feel rich!). Replace the spring, then put the bumpers back in the lid.
You may have to put more than one coin in, but it definitely gives a little more pop.

Sorry. It sounded a lot better in my head. It's actually very simple.
I meant deck lid/hatch by the way instead of just lid.

Also helps to put a little armorall or whatever on the gasket seal, It tends to stick and not allow a good release...Picture this for clarification. If you put glue on the seal, the trunk wouldnt open at all

My '06 does the same thing everytime I try to open the hatch. In fact, it's gottn so bad that now I have to pull on the hatch as I hit the button. Otherwise, it wont open. I did take it to the dealer once to have them look at it but of course it worked fine at the dealer

I mean the trunk seal...yes. It in a sense acts like a spring if it dosent stick to the mating base ---Try waxing that area also.

If the lid is trying to pop up and cant because the seal is sticking, even slightly.....correct it
